De Ranged Nobber truck

Post by De-Ranged »

So you understand "Nobber" is a mate of mine, been hanging round my sheds for yrs now, helping out and supplying piss... a real GC
In the time I've known him he has had almost as many trucks as girlfriends and with each one he has talked about doing a build on it
Well he's finally committed to one... a truck that is, a gen1 surf

A gen 1 IFS surf body onto a solid axle chassis with a little De Ranged style

As for me I'm off with a broken back... again  Doctors told me to take a min of 6 weeks off... spent 2 of that driving a truck down Wellytown, spent a week at home... bugger that there is only so long I can do nothing and have you seen mid week afternoon telly
I needed something to do... a nice easy convalescing project
Since I'm all good standing up or lying down (can be a struggle getting between the two at times tho) Nobber has had to come in to do the heavy lifting and the mechanical stuff that couldn't be lifted to the bench
Set up the chassis on some tall jack stands so I'm all good to engineer, went through the shed and picked out some bits for him (place is on the market so I'm getting rid of alot of stuff, just in case) found some fun bits that I had given up listing on TM, not for lack of interest just sick of dealing with muppet questions
The Original project lemon front diff
Image
Built this yrs ago and ended up parting out almost everything else
Shaved n Braced
Diff head rotated
Diff mounting bolts replaced with M10 button head cap screws
Swivil balls rotated to 3.5degrees of caster
U bolt eliminators
Swopped it to him for a standard housing and a diff
Finished it off with a few bits from my stock a set of high steer arms and a couple of 80 series tie rods I shortened
The springs are rears up front with a drop X member and +75mm extended shackles

After a night on the piss (always a bad combination... enthusiasts, piss and a shed full of shit) I tried to convince him to throw away the tired old 2LT for a recon 5m I've got sitting outback even offered it to him at half what its cost me (he is a good mate) all keen on the night he starts to pull it out along with the dual gearbox's bolted on the back
Next day rings me up "arghhh na... stick with the diesel, but can we do a deal on the boxes " so if anyone has a box for sale he owes me another one as part of the swop
Here they are (I deliberatly moved the 2lt out of the shot as thats just too sad to have in the pic)
Image
We are going to need some drive shafts so if anybody has some toyota DS's they want to part with drop me a line
I've still got to sort the rear X member (hopefully this arvo)

Here it is as it sits
Image

Made up a pair of custom Koon springs from a good late model set and some of a mates spare leaves, had to drill a couple of the leaves to move the pins (this centers the axle , the extra leaf is to limit axle wrap)
Did something a wee bit different with the new spring hangers
Image
I feel its better to weld up into the stronger load bearing sides, also easier for me to weld on as I had less welding when I'm bent over

Nobber had been complaining about the surf fuel tanks hanging down so I solved that
Fitted a rover car fuel tank in the back of the chassis and cleaned off the old fuel tank mounts
Image
I'll get a pic of mounted before he takes it away to drop the body on

Shaved and braced the back axle, so it matched the front
Image
Image

There ya go son your build thread is started you need to post up the bits you've done at home

Cheers Reece

nice work, but i don't mean to rain on your parade but given the fact that the two gearbox's now double the length of the front drive shaft maybe the rotation on the front diff is now a little too acute?

in saying that. you could use in the back and have four wheel steering?
Waiter...there is a drought in my glass.

At that length i guess it would be a 2 piece shaft?

Looking good though, quite interested to see how this comes along, its a little bit different to the norm, cant say ive seen two gearboxes before (on something like this anyway)

Yep its 2 gearbox's and one transfer case, and yes I am looking at doing a
2 piece front DS with a hanger bearing
It's a cheap way of getting extreme rock crawler gearing, this gives you the same gearing as dual transfercases with the extra low aftermarket gearsets and 5.29 diffs
Also gives you the option of gearing ratio's he's going to run 31''s for street running and buy a set of 35"s for play... leave the second box in 4th or 5th for street and drop a gear for the 35"s and he is still pulling the same rpm

the possibilities are quite endless with 2 gearboxes i suppose,

imagine low box, and both boxes in first, the crawl ratio would be amazing.

No different to my duals with 4.7 gears in one of them.

 come on Rok only some of my stuff.... one day you'll have to admit the lada is cool

I'll get back onto the lada soon, traded a few favors to get the motor sorted think the boys are coming in next fri to have a go... my back can't handle moving it

Nobbers list of stuff he owes has just gone up theres another 4.5 slippery on there... so if anyone has one for sale let me know
I'll have most of the engineering done on the chassis this weekend, the only sticking point is the front jack shaft I need a DS from a Double cab that has a hanger bearing... next option is raid the gearbox parts for an output shaft and flange hmmm

Pics to come tonight 8)

Think I've found an easy solution using a output shaft from an old transfercase that was stuffed, just got to talk to bearing shop about mis-alignment bearings or mounts
That was about the only success I had today  was finishing off the transfercase mounts, was using the trolly jack to hold the gearbox up in position first FU was it moved sideways got halfway through the mounts before I noticed.... so all that had to be cut and ground out
So this didn't happen again I used the tail of the chain to pull it to one side if it moved I'd see slack in the chain
Get half way there again to before I noticed there was too much daylight between the top of the X-member and the top of the gearbox.... trolly
jack has crept down... I started to fix it and thought F it I'm going home
Tomorrow I'll weld a bit of scrap under the gearbox with lugs so it can't move  and start cutting out todays effort

So no pics hopefully tomorrow

Just a few things to sort before it roll's out to get the body
Got the steering box mounted
Image
Just got the shock mounts and bump stops to sort for the front, but I'll do that once he has got me some shocks and body is on

Here's a couple of shots of how the tank sits in the back
Image
Image

Rear axle has had new perches done to rotate the diff head up to minimize DS angle I've done the rear DS as well, just shortened up the original.... and took a guess at how much the springs will compress with the body on and spot welded some blocks between the rear shackle mount and the chassis
Sorry no pics the camera didn't want to work when I left last night
If it likes me I'll get a shot tonight

All thats left to sort for the rear is the shock mounts when I have some and he wants me to shim a slippery....

Only other thing that I need done before he leaves is machining the calipers to fit the IFS hub swop... nobber needs to get the front axle together  and I'm waiting on the bearing and fancy rubber mount to make the front DS hanger bearing...

Cheers Reece

Oh and for the doubters I'm about to head in and do some.... Lada 8)

Just some more pics, since I happened to be down (getting down and up is still a bit of challange  ) I got a shot showing the gearbox mount, its something that had been floating round the shed for yrs... got a suspision I made it about 8yrs ago for mate and when he parted out the truck it came back ....

Heres the back axle with the new perches and the diff head rotated

A wee update

Here is a bit of tech for yo'll
Image
Thats the rear axle bias valve moved down out of the way so we can get the fuel filler tube through when the bodys on
Trim it back and set it up with an adjusting bolt so it can still adjust brake bias

The chassis was picked up last night by Nobber and is back at his place so he can paint it up and drop the body on, then it'll come back for a few body mods to fit the tank and trans

Since there was a bit of interest in the front drive shaft hears my answer...
I've set it up with a jack shaft, to hang off the front X member I built up over the gearbox, since he is on a budget I tried to use what he had so I used the old IFS front drive shaft
Cut the UJ off the end and machined a front output shaft from a transfercase I had lying around.... love machining heat treated shafts
Heres the end result
Image
I've used the double carden joint and the slip joint to deal with the slight cahnge in dirrection.... there will be a slight wooble from the UJ's as they rotate, a standard missalignment bearing would have delt with it... but with a short life span. Talking with SKF they offered a rubber collar for $12 unfortunatly I'd need to make my own mount
Image
I did look at using a hilux hanger bearing and a 2 piece shaft but with the extreme angle and the increased torque from the double box I didn't think it was worth going down that path

The only part I'm not happy with is the mount to the X member
Image
Don't get me wrong its not going to move, its just that it don't look cool

Thats me for a bit if Nobber can work out how to use a cammera there might be some pics before it turn up back at my shed

Hi Reese, sorry to hear about your glass back, I've lived with a crystal one for most of my adult life in fact just sitting here typing I can't get comfortable but Dr Appleton will fix it tonight while I watch the Crusaders thrash the Tah's  (remember not to add to much coke). Good work on the Surf but you still need to finish the Russian. With the rear brake bias valve are you manually adjusting as try and adjust to suit rather than using the weight distribution . Keep smiling,

IT'S THE COKE THAT MAKES YOU CROOK,

Reece, I saw you making t=at gt/box mount and my truck was about 1 yr old. So if you really want a date of build, that makes it mid 2006. LOL.

I wish I could afford to have a truck that was a REAL truck, guess who would build it?

 I am working on the russian.... got the front axle back in there and eyeing up a bit of a change might be cutting some of the frame work out and updating things
The back is very frustrating spend 12hrs down the shed but only acheive a few hrs worth of work  found tramadol coden and bourbon solves the pain problem.... don't seem to achieve much tho

Yes you are right bob made those adapters more than a few yrs ago made half a dozen theres one other in the shed that my shed mate bought with some parts the other 4 I have no idea
hmmm talking of old plans that truck of yours must just about the age you said I could SAS it

Trucks back at the shed going to sort the trans tunnel first
My measurements weren't too bad the only part of the trans that didn't fit under the floor is the "horse shoe hoop" factory X member.... the rest was close  very close, would have been a bit easier if parts had been trim'd when the body was put on but I can deal with the issues just means it'll take longer
Made up a 10 x 30 frame for the gearbox boot doing this as I've had to cut out a section of the seat belt reinforcing rib that runs up under the trans tunnel

Heres the issue
Image
Image

The section that is real close to the box is the reinforcing plate for the seatbelt mounts... if this had been trimmed off when the body was up its just a case of adding some 3mm plates as replacement....
The easiest way now is to
Image

Take it out from the top and rebuild a new floor section and seat belt mounts
should have this sorted tonight and I'll be able to set the rear suspension

The answer to the problem
Welded the boot frame to the front of the tunnel
Image

And then filled out the rest, the seat belt anchor has the doubler plates plug welded on the inside with the original captive nut
Image

I know its a bit of a cheat to do it in multiple pieces but its easier and faster

Got the suspension leveled today....
Image

set the height by the height of the rear shackle mounts... I've then welded some 10mm to the outside and 5mm on the inside so I can tap into it for mounts for the rear bars and the recovery hooks

Fingers X'd I'll get the rear bar mounted and the shocks mounted tomorrow
