4wd choices?
4wd choices?
Hey guys, my apologies for posting in here but I cannot see any general/better place to be posting.
Anyway, I have found two trucks I may buy in the next few days but am looking for opinions.
MU:
1993 (not a Wizard, just 2 door)
303thou km on the clock, but a carjam report says the last WOF reports 314thoukm and the one before that was 304thou km. When I look at updating the RUC on the LTNZ website it starts it from 310thou KM. They owners claim not to know anything about this (having owned it for 3 years) but said they will get it a WOF on Monday and also ask about the KM problem.
2.8lt Diesel. Manual
Manual 4wd hubs
Exhaust is rusting and window seals appear to be pealing but not leaking anywhere.
Recently had the waterpump and thermostat replaced.
New tyres
Timing belt done at 211thou km
Drove well, other than what I mentioned and the lack of space it was not bad.
Terrano:
1991
278thou km
2.7 Lt diesel, manual
flaw pan had rust repaired - A plate was inserted ,and certified cost
injection pump recon 22/02/11
new front shocks
Well maintained with oil filter replaced every 10000 km oil replaced every 5000 kms
As I understand the 91's have the problem with the gearbox and fifth gear - manuals especially.
Haven't seen the terrano yet, not sure on anything else about it but it looks in great condition from pictures and I'll go and look tomorrow morning.
Both are roughly the same price. I enjoy off roading so am interested in the power differences, but also wondering about long term problems or anything else you may think of with one vs the other.
Thoughts?

Re: 4wd choices?
I would look for something with lower k's, those ones are getting up there.
Re: 4wd choices?
Not an option. These are the only two within my budget. Just drove the Terrano today and there was a bubbling noise coming from what seemed to be the gearbox. He said it's on its fifth gearbox, and this one was put in close on 80,000km ago.
I once had a subaru with air stuck in the radiator that bubbled as I drove it and this sounded the same but just like it was more in the cabin, so wasn't entirely sure if it was the same thing.
Also, new injectors, and startmotor. Has had a bit of rust work done around the rear windows.

Re: 4wd choices?
seems a bit pricey for such high kms.
have a good look through TM, there is plenty out there in good cond with much less kms.

Re: 4wd choices?
Not really. I am looking in the wellington region.
They are the two lowest prices. Most are selling around 3g+ even if they have over 300thou km.
I thought Diesel engines had a life around 500thou km and petrols of 300thou?
The engine on the MU definitely sounded healthier, but I have less experience with them - I have known a lot of people who own terranos.

Re: 4wd choices?
The 2.8 motor in the Mu is a pretty good piece of kit and has a reputation for being a long liver

Main thing to look at is history of vehicle. Any well maintained engine should run 500k + but higher kms means more ware so more and more parts need replacing. The terranos do seem to be more common so should be easier to find parts if needed.

Yeah there are some decent ones in the country but as I say, I'm in wellington. And I need one within 2 weeks as I have to packup all my gear and move down to otago.

The terrano has been owned by the same guy for 15 years or so. He's got a bit of paperwork with it.
The odometer didn't kick in for about 2 minutes - he said the trucks been sitting for a while and hadn't happened before. 3rd gear was struggling at anything below 55km/hr.
I know what you're saying - there are lower k trucks around but they're mainly all in auckland.
Also, am hoping for manual, diesel, petrol is not a big difference for me though. Not a big fan of mitsi's.
Re: 4wd choices?

How much are you wanting? I can potentially but there's a limit and certain requirements. I'd be interested in hearing about it.
Edit: Just saw it in the wanted/sale section. That's double my current budget so probably a no go!
I know if I was in almost any other area I could happily buy one and not worry about it, but I don't want to buy a car only to sell it and buy something in the next few weeks.
Re: 4wd choices?
So decided I could look at Nelson area as well - I can get on the ferry with all my crap and have friends in Mot who might be able to pick it up for me.
So if anyone has suggestions on some in Nelson I'd be keen to hear. The gold terrano on trademe is an option at the moment but I'm unsure about buying a vehicle that I've never even seen myself!

Happy to help out with looking at Nelson based vehicles for you.

Cheers mate, I appreciate that.
I just noticed that gold terrano is an auto which is a bit of a bummer.
Just out of curiosity - seeing as the MU is going for a wof tomorrow. Other than the high km's, what do people think of MU's? Should I be worried about the rusting on the exhaust as an expensive fix soon/later?
What are the common problems they suffer from and I should look for?
I've done my best to research them and people who own them seem to say they go hard and are great little things, haven't seen anything bad about the engines, but I do remember some things from the past about problems (mainly the wizard perhaps?) The km's seem dodgey to me but it may just be some slip ups in the system. The engine sounded great though.
