Starting to get a few niggles sorted for the odd summer trip or three, fuel system has been less that reliable so a few filters replaced and a bosch 044 copy courtesy of these guys for a starting point.

Seems to work fine and truck running better than it has for a while, so pretty happy with it for the $110 price tag, list of things still left to sort tho as always

Forgot to fill up before hitting Waipara, had to leave early winched a four wheeler outta the river on the way back, think he'd been trying to push it out for ages as he was sweating something chronic and pleased as hell to see me

Made this for the camping gear to live in for nek mission, should be enough room for tent, pack, cooker, and bedding with a tarp over that lot to keep it dry....or is that cool at the mo , it's removable but I'll probably keep it on most of the time and chuck ropes, bush shit etc in it.
I didn't steal it from the local F&C shop....I built it, courtesy of some leftovers of Tom's

Front diff not too healthy as I suspected




So time to build up a front diff to stand the rigors of a V8 and big tyres.
I've decided to go high pinion, Nitro 4.88 29 spline ring and pinion, with drive flange to suit, with soild spacer.
Talking to others and reading pirate porn, I think this set up will last the distance
Any other ideas..

The pinion has moved due to damage not set up, the crush spacer took a pounding due to a rock crawling trip when pinion meeting rocks, common occurance on rock crawlers hence a solid spacer going in

Interesting, I assume the damage is done in reverse to effect the crush tube?

I wasn't getting at you for not setting the diff up properly, I've been setting a few diffs up lately and 30% of them have had the bearing caps swapped with ones from other diffs. When people do this it's difficult to get the setup right without careful measuring/surface grinding resulting in blown diffs.

Damage is caused in either direction, if lots of weight pushes on the flange from below it puts that pressure onto the crush sleeve, effectively crushing it some more, resulting in the pinion being able to be drawn into the ring gear under load.....hope that made sense
As for me being worried about setup of the damaged diff, it was in the truck when I purchased, however I will set up the new diff

Ah ok, flange gets driven up and pulls the pinion shaft through. Weakest link is the crush sleeve. Solid spacer should increase the force you can put on the flange nicely.

I'm gonna use solid spacers in my 8" diffs, more setup time but should be longer lasting for these kinds of applications.

Have a read of these pages, I used Zuk's methods for my diffs and have had no issues at all, no broken teeth, still showing perfect pattern after five or six years of handling 40" tires etc. The secret to keeping toy 8" diffs together is setting the Carrier Bearing preload to 100ft/lbs, find the reasons on the pirate thread as to why... basically pre stresses the housing so the ring cant flex any further... certainly works for me, and for a lot of customers in the US

has anyone got a spare hi pinion housing complete with bearing caps
the one i've got has no caps, not a biggie as was going to use the caps I already have from a couple of diffs but they are factory matched and would be better if I had a whole one.
I would consider a whole diff (high pinion) if anyone has one

other option is bringing in one of these, think i'll get a price on freight first

I've got all the parts sorted for a high pinion front diff.



Result will be as planned, nitro 4.88 R&P, 29 spline drive flange, solid spacer, putting the two pinion carrier in with lockright, should be a rock solid set up
Build time I may take a couple of pics of pinion set up during the build if anyone is interested.....plenty of diff builds on the WWW so probably more of the same really

Diff build problem........gotta have one or two setbacks, long story short, blued up, set backlash, good backlash one side half turn of diff no backlash.....carrier spun in a lathe......bent

Any chance you could measure the thickness of that crown wheel for me, should be either ~22mm at its fattest point or more like ~25+mm at its thickest point... Would be quite interested to compare the Nitro gear to a few I imported from Asia:

thats a bugger, are you going to bore it out so that it fits, do the shims fit.

I have a spare 6x9 garage at home and plenty of free time, i'm looking for something to do quietly from home during the week in my spare time and thinking, investing in a press and lathe could be an option to maybe do a bit of diff specialty work for the 4x4 scene here in Canterbury, i don't know if there's a big market but it wouldn't matter as overheads would be zero and I already have a salary

Anyway I've still got a reasonable tick list to sort out before it's ready for the Reefton trip in July, but at least the diff item is almost sorted

On the upside, i'm real pleased with the way the coilovers in the front and the tweaks to the rear have worked out, they made the vehicle a lot better thats for sure, and of course helped it flex a bit better

Diff completed today, got a solid spacer made at JT engineering (gotta get me a lathe ) stitched it all together, 1 shim@ 0.1 needed managed close to perfect preload on the pinion bearings.

Solid spacer was way too short for the cruiser diff (12mm), shims I can (and did X1) use



Diff will be going in tomorrow, about time

Grass karting with my boys at this stage, of course if it doesn't sell i'll still be 4 wheeling which I've been doing for a long time, and this is the best machine I've had for that here in the south.....a cab and heater are a must for the winter coast trips which IMO are the most fun
But like most Dads with kids I have other hobbies as well and grass karting won't happen while I own this, time and money only goes so far, but I do have a minimum dollar for the hilux, and if it doesn't get that then the winter coast trips are still there for me and the boys will have to be content without karting in there lives
