Nissan terrano d21 tyre size

Post by Camfitz30 »

I have a terrano d21 the facelift version and its a great truck for off roading! I'm quite new to this "sport" and I want to know a recommended tyre size for it. I want to put kuhmo kl71 tyres on it with 15x8 white steelies but I'm trying to figure out WHAT IS THE MAX TYRE SIZE YOU CAN PUT ON BEFORE CHANGING ALL THE STEERING? Could I run 32x10.5-r15 with out putting the cv's under much stress or bigger or smaller? Cheers :P

You can fit 32's on without much changes, maybe a bit of trimming here and there, depending on what offset rims you go for, although it does put the speedo out and slows acceleration.

31's seem to be a good choice, they're cheap compared to 32's in most cases, and you don't need to do anything to get them on, if your dropping your tyre pressure tyre height wont make much difference, unless your using 35's etc.

Taller the better, say you air a 31" down to 15psi and you air a 33" down to 15psi the 33s still going to be taller = more clearance

I think Kiwipete runs 33x12.5 w/ stock steering...is it holding up well Pete?

I have an idler brace and steering dampener with the said tyres. I will be dropping down to 32" tyres when the current ones are up for renewal.
My reason is purly because the cost of trimming the guards against tyre damage, and damage to tyres from guards is not worth it IMHO.

Yes i will be doing the 2wd steering mod at some stage but i still question the need and cost of bigger tyres than 31" in all reality. Stick to 31'' tyres and beef the front stering, you will go just as far as me on my 33s
Ok people, move along. Nothing to see here. Thank you, move along.

When you say the 2WD steering mod, you mean taking the steering linkages off a Datsun ute or something? And where is the best point at the back of the terrano to fit a recovery hook?

Use the search button for 2wd steering, it is in the bottom right of the banner at the top of the page, scroll up.

I have my recovery hook on the side of my towbar mount where it attaches to the chassis but it depends on the setup of your truck. Some pictures of the rear of your truck would help us decide for you.

Someone will correct me but im sure you can remove the cat.
EGR has been posted many times on here, again the search button is your friend.
PS. it is good to remove or block it off.

31's will fit with no mods, I run 32" buckshots with a 50mm body lift and 50mm suspention lift and they still rub. I also found the 32's kept wrecking
my idler arm bushes.

With regards to your tyre size, when looking at the 31 - 33 range on a standard setup, just beware that each manufacturers tyre may vary in size from each other. For example, a well mannered AT tyre in 32" should be pretty close to 32". Now look at a 32" MT agressive with big chunky tread and its probably closer to 33".

On a standard setup, I wouldn't recommend going any bigger that 32" ATs. Or 31" MTs.
My 32" Maxxis Bighorns MT762's do clip the bottom corner of my front guards at a certain steering angles, but not enough to cause damage. However my truck also has all sorts of modifications to strengthen the front end.

At the end of the day, you are not going to go anywhere near 35" and the difference of 1" (31-32) on these trucks really doesn't make much difference.

I had my truck on the standard 31" ATs for many years and even though it sat low, didn't have monster feet on it, it could still go many places others would struggle with. Really it seemed to come down to the soft and flexible back end, giving it good tyre to ground contact. Oh and awesome driving skills

Sorry, almost an essay. But food for thought.

Thanks for that everybody! My knowledge is building! When you say I can fit 31MT (fullthrottle) on a standard setup it makes me wonder. I thought I would have to at least fit a 2inch body lift on it because I'm running 23.5 AT standards on it at the moment and she's getting pretty close to touching. Here's a couple of photos

heres my old 3 door terrano with the same rims (somewhat less shiny tho) as yours on 31" duelers

the back end never rubbed at all and i only ever had slight rubbing on full lock in the front (wont be a problem if your torsion bars havent sagged)

Thats miles off touching, just remember that when you have lets say a 29inch tyre, and you upgrade to a 31 inch tyre, they are only 1 inch higher on either side.

ive run 29 inch ats, 31's, 31's that measured 32 and none of them rubbed, 29's where on standard rims, one set of 31's where on standard rims, close to 32's were on a slightly wider rim.

Is the size you have on sidewall of tyre 235/75R15?
The 235/75 is the metric way of measuring tyre size, and is similar in size to the 30x9.5R15. So a 31x10.5R15 (common size for '31's') will only be roughly half an inch radius larger, and tread approx an inch wider.
