Tracks in Wellington

Are there any public tracks around wellington (other than red rocks)? I've had a look in this section and can't find anything.

Look at joining a club they usually have access to other areas

ccvc are a good start if you into the shiny trips otherwise there are a few other clubs here, what sort of trips do you normally do?

Hi fellas,

we did the Odlins road track on Sunday in my brothers 70 series swb landcruiser. It was the first time either of us had been on that track.

We made it down past the hut, crossed the river a few times and then it basically turned into just boulders on the riverbed and we couldn't see where/if the track continued. I know that you can mountain bike/walk down to the otaki forks.

After the first river crossing just past the hut there was a section of the track that was blocked by branches and stuff, but you could veer sharp left down to the river. Does anyone know why that part is blocked? When we were in the riverbed we had a walk around and think we found where it comes out but it looked like it just comes out into the river?

We turned back at that point and then climbed out. You had to give it a bit of speed in a few spots, the part by the two burnt out trucks was a bit challenging both ways. What's the go with those? Did people roll them and then just abandon them or something?

Anyway, it was a good trip. Thanks to the guys who commented for the recommendation.

I been wheeling for years and thats one place I would never go on my own with only 1 truck.......

thats keen

unless its a gravel road, its highly recommended to pair up or find a 3rd truck to tag along

but in saying all of the above, its your call

Yeah we were pretty careful. Got out and walked any section we thought may be dicey before we went down it to make sure we were happy with it. The track was in good nick though nothing was too full on I didn't think. I read a few threads on here where some of the corners down to the hut had washed out but they were all fine.

Some of us just like 4x4ing on our own [ have done Odlins track a few years ago ] BUT you must have very good recovery gear and a well set up truck ..i'm not a club person,so do most of my 4x4ing on my own [ do go with other people sometimes ] i find for what i do it is just easier [ checking out gold history and the old huts around the S.I ] and i have done a lot of 4x4ing in both Islands,some of it very tuff going..Some of the West Coast tracks are interesting..also if you do drive alone i would definitely recommend doing a good 4x4 course it is very worth while
