Maybe a stuffed drive shaft universal.

Could be a number of things, depending on what model (but I am going along lines of Discovery or Range Rover as appears to be auto).

worn balljoint on A frame at rear diff
Worn suspension bushes
Wear on gearbox output shaft
Drive shaft universals

Does it have the rubber crappy thingee joint in the drive train?

If worn or had it, it may flop around a little.

I'm just guessing though.

Hop underneath and give the shafts a wriggle (up down left right) and try to turn them by . Any movement will be amplified by the engine torque so would be worse. If all is tight then I'm buggered if I know.

Just wondering if its backlash in the diff, check the pinion for movement.

i had this in my safari aswell every time i took off from a intersection i heard i thump, all it turned out to be the torque from the engine making the exhaust hit the rear bar, so its best to get under it and give everything a good wriggle check for play in things

Thats normal behavior for that German ZF auto, bit of a thump when you go from P or N to D or R as it sends everythng through 2 gearboxes and 3 diffs, well documented, is there a V8 Disco owner around?
