What coils to use??

Post by PLAYUP »

Hi All,
Ive just cut the rear off my bighorn and im trying to select suitable springs as the current ones are waaay to hard..

I would like to keep it about the same (maybe +25-50mm) and i realise that i need lower spring rate but longer springs so they compress to a simmilar height when fitted, but where to start looking?

do i use car ones?

what does everyone else use?

I went to Autolign http://www.autolign.co.nz/ in Dunedin (they national) and looked through their catalogues and found a coil with diameter, height and number of coils that was about what I thought I wanted and they actually let me try them.. So I run 50mm Lift Lada Niva rear coils in the front of my v8 powered buggy.
Lots of googleing also works. or trial and error.
Dont follow me. i'll get stuck and need a tow..

As above google and trial and error. When I coiled my Sj413 I started with Vitara springs, to short and soft, google found the rates etc more google found other posibilities, tried fail to soft still bit more google and mint. Prob a bit light for your application but 94shape preludes and 98+ accords have real long springs
Toy - Zuk chassis tub, hilux 4.88 axles and transfer, Nissan CA18DE motor and auto trans, sc12 supercharger, 32 10'5 simex, twin motor 8274 custom freespool. Well the parts are all there in various corners of the shed

When I did the coilovers for my truck I spent a couple of days in the junk yards around Napier and Hastings measuring suitable coils

As far as a coil that you can fit a shock in your softest and longest are the rear of the lada niva or the accord that Meatc mentioned another sorce of the accord rear springs is the rover 600 series cars they are just a re-badged honda

There was an old school little euro hatch that had long and very soft coils, but I'm sorry I can't remember what it was

Cheers Reece

if you put LWB springs in a short wheel base if gives you 50mm lift so the shorties will not work for what your wanting

i dunno from the photos in his other thread alot of weight has been removed from the arse end so that will make up somewhat for the smaller springs

 a coil springs rate is based on dia of the wire (thicker the wire the stiffer the spring), the dia of coil (larger = softer) and the number of laps (more laps softer it gets)

So you want a large dia coil, with lots of laps or a coil spring made from light wire
I did a post explaining this a while back... think it was something along the lines of "leaf springs vs coil springs" run a search
