I think the first Grand
When I first used 4 wheel drive in this car it was fine until I turned making a great racket I owned a earlier model a 1991 auto I was able to drive everywhere in 4 wheel drive
How does one no what is wrong and is it the transfer box front diff or maybe in the front steering which is faulty
It is fine driving it normally in I think rear wheel drive

Where are you using 4wd? Not a good idea to use it on hard high traction surfaces eg concrete. Doing so will cause strange noises.

I was told this by someone else that driving on hard surfaces caused noises however as mentioned in my older model I drove every where in 4 wheel drive often driving from Auckland to Thames when the weather was bad

I also need to ask what is the difference with the engine which is in my vehicle to my 1991 both where /are 16v injected however look totally different

Vitara's and Grand Vitara's don't have centre diffs so you shouldn't drive them on grippy surfaces with 4wd engaged as you'll wind up the drive train and potentially damage something.

A wet road might be slippery enough not to wind things up but I thought it would be dangerous due to one or two wheels have to skid at some stage which could lead to more loss of traction. Never tried it myself so I'm guessing on that one.

The engines are the same, its just your later one will most likely be a G16 block (someone correct me if im wrong) which are pretty much the same as the g16a. The difference is your one will be a coil pack model, that is it wont have a distributor to distribute spark to the plugs. Your old rocker cover most likely said 16valve across it and your new one wont. It will also have little black boxes on top of the rocker cover which are the coil packs.

as far as the problem you are having in 4wd it almost sounds like their could be a different ratio in the rear diff to the back. If someone has blown a diff and just replaced it with any suzuki one that fits it may be wrong. so you will need to test for this. use google to find the correct diff you should have in the front and back.

I had this problem with my samurai when i brought it, the diffs are 3.7:1 but the retard suzuki company that sold it too me had but a 3.9:1 diff in the back.

Neither your current or old vehicle has/had a centre diff - it's simply not suitable for driving on hard surfaces in 4wd, and will wind up the diffs as mentioned and fark something, or at least give the diffs, bearings, t case and driveshafts a hard time... You may get away with it open road driving, big radius corners, but try doing 20 circles in a carpark on full lock and you will likely smash something. Rav4s and similar have a centre diff, purely to allow 4wd on the road.
