nissan zd 30 motors, are these the ones to avoid.
been looking at an upgrade to my daily nz new patrol swb with a gu long wheel base, just want to know a bit about the zd30 motor really.. basically i have been told to avoid as they are total shit..... can anyone give me more info. i know the 4.2 pretty well and have noticed the price of the zd equiped trucks becoming lower priced than 3 year older 4.2 trucks... or is this just rip off nz car stealers.
there was a gu2 with a 4.2 transplant on trade me last week that went for $19000. so did nissan ever get the zd motor sorted??

Re: nissan zd 30 motors, are these the ones to avoid.
the common rail ones are fine. the pre 2004 ones zd30 are the ones to avoid the most.
Re: nissan zd 30 motors, are these the ones to avoid.
From my experience all of the zd's are shit for so many reasons most commonly timing chain , craking heads , faulty common rail injectors ,
They are just an imbarresment to nissan , save the pennies and go for a td42 one ,
My mate brought the one with the td42 (the red 05 for 19k)and i definatly would have if i didnt have 4 gq's already , there is some not bad ones around 2000 model white patrol with 215 is on the clock for 20k buy now on trade me ,
The zd option will save you on purchase but after you spend 8 plus k rebuilding it the td42 option would be cheaper !!!

Hahahahah^^^ i just about fell of my seat ,
Re: nissan zd 30 motors, are these the ones to avoid.
I've got one at 270,000kms and still going strong, plenty of info on the internet on why the ZD30 motors are going shit.
90% of the time just keep the oil changes & maintenance up, dont thrash the tits off it and you'll rarely have problems.

I agree with colin, had an 04 Navara with zd30 had a great run out of it, was an ex lease vehicle. Wrightsons I think, was well serviced and sold it with 260,000kms. Was a great truck.
Softroader VW Amarok nowadays....

Re: nissan zd 30 motors, are these the ones to avoid.
I would love to get a zd30 and pull the manifolds off, get rid of the egr and make my own manifolds and fit a decent turbo.
Of course get rid of the electronic control unless you can break the code and access it correctly.
These engines could make some real power then

for the non common rail ZD30 there is a crowd in ozzie thats cracked the coding. but the ecu is not a writeable chip so they have to remove the old one and solder in a writeable chip. then you can program anything you like.

Wow really thats cool. Do you know who it was
Re: nissan zd 30 motors, are these the ones to avoid.
can't remember sorry. i forget which forum they did a thread on it. probably find info on patrol4x4

We have just killed outs at work, very prone to doing fuel pumps which are expensive to replace as you need a new ecu to, the alternators if they go are expensive to replace as there 2stage and they also over heat, nice power though out pulls mates chipped hilux
Re: nissan zd 30 motors, are these the ones to avoid.
never heard of requiring a new ecu because of pump failure. have heard need to match ecu to pump. unless your referring to the ecu IN the pump.
the pump is probably cheaper than common rail setup is worth.
never heard of alt being 2 stage ??? they have a one way clutch which can fail.

Re: nissan zd 30 motors, are these the ones to avoid.
The non common rail ZD30's have a bosch vp44 injection pump which have an ecu mounted on them as well as the actual engine ecu. These are either a PSG5 or PSG6, the really early ones are the 5 the later ones are the 6. the PSG6 doesnt work on the early engine ecu.
I have only had the issue on the early terrano's from 99 to early 01 where the ecu has to be replaced when the pump is rebuilt and has a new PSG unit fitted.

It is a non commin rail, not sure what computer nath ment he just said you will highly likely need the computer for the pump or it wont run,
Had alternator replaced last week and he said they 2 stage, 1 stage does idle to 3000 rpm then kicks into a 2nd which puts less charge in so it does over charge, this is in a navara tho, nath (kaipoi repowers) said they can do a conversion to a 3.2 turbo for 6k drive in drive out and you will no longer have any issues and will have better and more power out of a more reliable set up

Re: nissan zd 30 motors, are these the ones to avoid.
they might be pulling your leg.
quick google shows standard alternators are two stage regulators but not in the way you describe.
tho ~3000 rpm is when it gets to max current output anyway.
