Terrano D21 mods

Post by Camfitz30 »

Over the last week or so I decided to start doing the mods on my truck, I'm only 17 by the way... :D :D :D

I started with this, standard 2.7L TD auto

After abit of research I decided these KL71 31x10.5/R15 would be a good first tyres! Oh and don't forget the 15x8 steelies  the old tyres use to get stuck a wee bit too easy! :D

Next thing I brought a snorkel for it...

Even though the 31's didn't rub I still wanted to lift it. On a budget that is haha. Got some body blocks off a fellow offroad express user and after reading threads and talking to Kiwipete I decided to put the lift in, managed to do it within 1 and a half days over the weekend!

I made a dopey mistake of buying the wrong thread pitch. Terrano a are 1.25 (Metric fine) I Brought 1.50 standards and being queens birthday weekend nothing was open so bogged it up by welding an extra 50mm in the bolts, only the back 4 bolts, the rest of the bolts I could just use the standard nuts.

My ride home that night  and the perfect workshop

WE HAVE LIFT! Forklift is so much easier than 2 jacks!

On Monday mate and I went on a bit of a trip to test out the mods! Over Mckenzie Pass in the snow and Burkes pass! Great fun!

It was about 6 PM driving home, about 20km away from home and my gearbox pretty much stopped working. It was stuck in 2nd gear wouldn't do anything else so I checked the dipstick, had something in the oil, took it into the workshops drained the oil dropped the sump out and the magnet in the sump had nothing stuck to it so I took the filter out noticed all this black sludgy shit blocking up the filter scooped it out put a magnet though it and nothing stuck to it, done abit more thinking and then I clicked last time I done the trans service I used gasket stripper on the sump gasket which lifted the paint on the inside of the sump!! I mustn't of removed all of it. So cleaned out the filter replaced the oil and had the old girl going by 9 that night! So I had a pretty big weekend doing the stuff I love!!! Getting my hands dirty on my truck! And 4WDING!

Looking good,

Dont know if i like the idea of welded bolts for the body though.

Looks like you sorted everything else out just fine though, good on ya for giving it a go.

When the trans takes off in 2nd its in limp mode, basiclly somethings wrong like over heating, or clogged up oil etc, just for future reference if your searching for it etc.

Good to see ya have a decent trans cooler, allways a good start.

So whens the intercooler install?

Depending on which way you want to go, the early Subaru rs legacy water to air ones are cheap, quite easy to fit too, or an isuzu bighorn one looks easy aswell, just remember to grab a bonnet scoop.

i picked up a Legacy setup for $120, which was the intercooler, pump, radiator and assorted hoses, cost $70 to get the intercooler modified to fit, and bits like silicone joiners etc.

what part of the country you in?

not yet, had to put it on hold for quite a while, but started it up again, so ill grab some pics for ya when its done.

good part of the country to be in for 4x4ing, heaps of tracks around there, and not far from the Christchurch lot.

once i redo my flares ill take some pics of my truck and put them up, had to redo a couple of small things to get it how i wanted, but close to finishing now.

Nice,
I want a snorkel but in Australia there a bit more expensive.
Been searching for a cheaper one that looks good.
http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/160964309136
And that exact one for AUD 164.99 from MUDSTUCK is $299 in Australia

Good to see you got it sorted, [leased I could be of assistance for you too.
Yes do replace those two bolts ASAP

I did a post a quite while back on my Isuzu 3.1 intercooler setup if you want to search through the forums for it. It will give you an idea of what is ahead of you should you choose one of them for your system.

Keep up the mods, your truck is looking nice.

PS, pity I did not have more time over the holiday weekend, I was staying at Geraldine so was only a stones throw away from you then :)
Ok people, move along. Nothing to see here. Thank you, move along.

Removed my thermostat housing today because my truck takes a while to heat up so I thought it might of had a bugger thermostat. Once I removed it shocked to find NO THERMOSTAT! Previous owner must of removed it for some reason???????

Hi there, Nice truck!, I am 16 years old and I live in wanaka, I have now owned my 1995 2.7 TD Terrano since the start of this year, I work at an engineering shop here after schools and saturdays so I am very keen to mod my Terrano a little. I want to fit a snorkel but cannot find any relevant information on how to fit it, I have heard its very difficult and most of the front end has to come off? Any help would be much appreciated. :-) :D Here a photos of her. :)

Snorkels aren't too hard to fit they just take a bit patience and some precision drilling  Ask around someone will have a template for one

Thanks so much for your reply! :) Is it true you have to run a hose though the side fender and out an existing hole further along to the front of the bonnet? :?:

Nope, have a look through the link I posted above some time ago, you will see how I did my snorkel. I did it with the guard on, unbolted nothing.
