WARNING - Wireless remotes for Winches

Post by fullthrottle »

Some of you have have already read my other post. So anyway I ended up stuffing my winch last weekend because all of a sudden it came to life on its own, sitting on the side of a track.
Needless to say nothing was going to stop it winding in....

Anyway, have been performing various tests with Michael from winch.co.nz ,and it appears that the wireless receiver got stuck in the ON (in) position. Upon closer inspection, those receivers are not that great in the elements. Recommendation is to disconnect them from the solenoid all together, or IF you must use them, mount it inside the cab and just extend the cables back to your solenoid.

For me it was bloody handy. Being out on the farm alone each time and being able to bed the landanchor in remotely was great.

Michael being the good lad he is, is now trying to find some parts for me to get mine back up and running.

If anyone has a Runva EWX9500 that can be used for parts, I would appreciate it. I just need :

2 x Tie Bars
1 x gear box casing (Just the part the tie bars bolt to)

Next fun job will be trying to get that cable out.

Cheers

Cheers for heads up. It was one of the reasons I hooked the remote and incab controls to a isolation switch. Was worried someelses remote would also trigger my winch. The wired controller is setup to work period with way I wired mine

I have done pretty much the same thing with my setup too.
I also silicon sealed the receiver box to prevent any water ingress when I installed it all.
Touch wood I have not had any issues with it to date.
Ok people, move along. Nothing to see here. Thank you, move along.

p.s. I take it you leave your winch in gear even when not using it?

Yes those wireless units are NOT waterproof - you need to mount them inside your truck next to the convenient switch you've just installed in your dash...

The relays corrode and generally weld themselves to one position when corrosion gets bad enough - fortunately mine went permanent to the OUT direction!!

May not help. this happened when Number 1 son was using it at GF place and he couldn't stop it winching out,. when it ran out of cable it started to winch in again, at which point Dad got the panicked phone call. Son was able to take it out of gear and just let it run till the battery went flat, leaving dad to sort out the mess.

No but it gave me more time to react!

I now have the remote wired into the dash switch with an on/off switch separately just for the remote control power so I can turn it off just by pushing the button.

I keep a 13mm spanner in the glove box so I can quickly whip off a battery cable as my starter occasionally likes to stick on, but it would be good for this situation also.

 my 13mm spanner is taped to shock hoop brace.
If you break it... build it stronger.
