Diesel gurus,
I have replaced my injector pump on my TD27t, I think I have the timing right....well, it's running anyway.
What are the consequences of having it too far advanced or retarded? I don't have much experience with diesels so I can't judge it by ear as I've heard is possible, and there's FA room to use the timing adaptor/DTI.

Generally speaking, too far advanced and it will sound like a bag of spanners or knock hard especially when you rev up. The timing advances automatically as engine speed increases anyway so if the static timing is out it just gets worse. Shortens engine life too.
Too far retarded and you'll be down on power and overheat the exhaust manifold - probably the turbo too. It's better to get it right even if you have to take the injector pipes off to fit the DTI gauge.
For Terrano R20 (1993-96) the injector pump plunger stroke should set set at 0.36-0.40mm with No1 Piston at TDC.
For Terrano R20 TD27Ti (1996-98) the plunger stroke is 0.25-0.29mm.
For Terrano WD21 (1990-92) the plunger stroke is 0.57-0.61mm No1 Piston TDC.
That's all the figures I have for TD27T's.
Hope that helps Cheers

Injectorod's given a good description. You could trial a few positions and see how performance changes and go by feel (like setting petrol ignition timing by ear) or another way of doing it that may get past injector pipes easier (has one like this in TD service manual

You can get small DTI gauges with a diameter about the size of a 2 dollar coin which can be fitted without taking the injector pipes off. Probably not cheap tho -and they need to read in 1/100th mm so quite delicate.
