turboing a 1pz

Post by pradon35s »

Iv been looking into turboing my 1pz landcruiser, just for a wee bit more power and pull. Not thinking on running high boost maybe 5-7psi.

Has anyone used petrol engine turbos on diesels? Iv been looking at using a t3t4 turbo, purely because they are comman, cheap and there's all parts and flanges available.
Would this turbo work well? Or would it not pick up enough boost before say 3, 200rpm..? I wantboost quickly as hate over revingy engine.

Am I better off to use a diesel engine turbo like one off a 1kz or similar.

Turbos designed for petrols are fine on diesels (just not necessarily vice versa due to extra heat in petrols exhaust). Its the sizing that's the tricky bit, and people do have different preferences. I think the rule of thumb is to select a turbo off a petrol with approx half the cubic capacity of the diesel it'll go on, so in your case off a 1800cc petrol. A t3t4 would be large for a 1.8petrol, so my thoughts are it'll be too large for you (especially if preferring low down power).
Interested to hear others thoughs on the matter, and with any luck you'll hear from someone who's turbd a 1pz themselves.

There's a guy on ih8mud.com (crushers) that has done a few.
Log on there and ask him what he's done.

I would use a petrol turbo, boost comes in to late.

Could use a turbo off a 1hz/1hdt ct26 or talk to steve murch he might be able to build one, or even Kaipoi repower-nath hamond should be able to aort you out

T3t4 could rebuild it with better internals to suit the enginge to....

I put a turbo on my 1PZ and I got more than just a little increase... more like twice the power. This thing will now do 150 kph with 35's on haha.
I used a Scarles SCR185 turbo (tried to find compressor wheel specs etc but having trouble).
It was a very simple fit that I actually did myself in farm workshop... might sound a bit dodgy but it's been in for well over a year and no troubles.
I used the same manifold and cut off the old exhaust flange and welded on the appropriate turbo flange and redid the exhaust through to 3 in pipe. The intake side was even easier as you will just need reducer hoses etc to plumb it up. The oil feed and dump pipes were sourced locally.
I only run about 9psi and this thing spools up well under 2000 rpm. I did put an egt and boost gauge in just to keep an eye on it and with a slight tweak on diesel pump you'll be away laughing. An intercooler might be useful if you're towing just to keep temps down a bit
Total cost - around $700 haha

Found the specs...
*PART NUMBER: SCR185.T2
*Turbine Housing: A/R 0.49
*Compressor Housing A/R 0.42
*T2 Flange
*Rated around 185Kilowatts

Not sure if this actual part is still available but as these specs work well, My advice would be to look for something very similar.
Give Scarles a call, they were very helpful.
