80 series V8 Diesel conversion
80 series V8 Diesel conversion
Anyone out there put a V8 diesel in an 80 series landcruiser. I'm just starting to do some research as I'm considering it. Looking for all information from engine to gearbox and transfer case. What works with what and what would fit best.
Re: 80 series V8 Diesel conversion
You priced up a 2nd hand yota v8 diesel?
Was a 100series with one in it on trademe ages ago, think a crowd in Nelson? Did it.

Re: 80 series V8 Diesel conversion
why V8 it? what are you trying to achieve???
1HDT + turbo upgrade + FMIC + Big Bore + Water & meth injection depending on how much boost you run can put you over 600Nm
or if you want to spend more money you could do the same on a transplanted 1HDFTE + chip it and you should be around 700Nm.

Re: 80 series V8 Diesel conversion
Basically after more power for towing. Iv'e got the 1HDT engine. Boosted to 13psi. Its always a juggle between keeping EGTs down and Trans temp down. I find on hill climbs towing 3.5 T I end up in first gear to keep temps down. Or in low range. What could I do as far as turbo upgrade goes and what would I achieve.
Re: 80 series V8 Diesel conversion
Whatever you do, don't use a Detroit/GM 6.2/6.5 V8. That engine is a pig to keep in tune, doesn't make anywhere near as much power as it should and was designed by some hicks in a barn in Ohio.

Re: 80 series V8 Diesel conversion
Would like to keep this thread going to gather maximum information on a V8 diesel conversion as its a possability. I'm also going to start another thread on how to get maximum power from a 1HDT engine as that may still be an option.
Re: 80 series V8 Diesel conversion
Unless you have a good source for the toyota 1vd engine, there around 25-30grand for the engine alone. We go through quite a few at work.

If you can find me a good V8 diesel at the right price I might let you have it.

Prefer not to consider price at this stage. Rather sort out the best option and then work back if I need to. It may turn out the best option is to stay with what I have but its definatly worth exploring as its a real possibility I may go ahead with it.

Tell me more about the 1vd engine. Would it fit into my landcruiser. Would it bolt up to my trans if not what else would I need to replace.

Seeing as you have the internet i'd assume you have seen this
100 series [105 live axle] conversion? http://www.australianimages.com.au/conversion/
looks pricey, id just go with a gturbo and big front mount.

You could always look at a duramax. You would never run out of power with one of those and you can pick them up out of the states for about 6k if you import it yourself. Marks Adaptors have been making a conversion kit for them to an 80 series. They may have finished it. Those will blow most other v8 diesels out of the water.

Common rail diesels go good, quiet and powerful.
Re: 80 series V8 Diesel conversion
Has it ever been on a dyno? if so what did it make?
You need to cool the intake air down. That is the first thing you NEED to do. it will drop your engine temp, your exhaust temp and put some long term reliability into your set up
Change your turbo to something that isn't heating the air so much at 15psi, and spray 5-600mls a minute of 1/3 methanol 2/3 water down its throat, enjoy the extra power and watch the temps drop back into the safe zone

all you will need is a fuel tanker as well

Re: 80 series V8 Diesel conversion
I would consider a dirty old cummins 6bt quite a common conversion in the states, loads of torque, the 6bt ISB is even better by the looks of it.
Re: 80 series V8 Diesel conversion
The 6.6l Duramax is architecturally an Isuzu designed engine and has had a good reliability reputation since its release in 2001.
The Cummins 6BT 12 valve are a proven, highly tunable engine with a proven strength record - kind of like the Nissan TD42 of the US Market. On the downside they weigh a ton (literally, almost) and they are not a fast engine like the DMax, they are designed for pulling power.

Had a good read of that article last night. Alot of good info in it. Just not sure how much different the 80 series would be compared to the 100 series for fitting.
Re: 80 series V8 Diesel conversion
I fitted one of these common rail v8 diesels out of the flat deck 79 series with the single turbo an was bolted up to its manual gear box from the flat deck. Fitted it also to a 105 series landcruiser which it based in the same chasis as the 80series. the engine is a tight fit all round, height an width.wiring for the motor is head scratching stuff and hard to get wiring diag for an you cant get after market ecus like with petrols. motor went very well but was in desperate need of a ecu chip to get its true performance.very detuned.
