Help identifying trailer hubs

Post by 3VILC »

Does anyone know a brand of trailer hub that would be stamped with the word 'TASMAN'? It is a disc braked hub and I am trying to identify what calipers would fit As usual repco were not that helpful and wanted me to pull the hub and measure all the bearing sizes etc. Caliper brackets are already fitted so I was hoping itwould not be too hard to fit a new set of brakes

I thought that too, even similar design on the gaurds, but they reckon they've never made thier own hubs.

Oddly different is that they are fitted with a grease nipple between the bearings and incorperate a hole to access this, rear non-braked hubs are the same. Unless someone has added this 'feature'.
Might just have to measure everything I can and send it to everyone I can and see if they can match it to any of thier listings

If anyone can offer anything further,
They are 11inch solid 12mm thick discs, with 3 1/4inch caliper bolt spacing. Most trailer kits I can find seem to be 3.5inch bolt spacing. Prehaps its made to fit speedway calipers or worse someone has made it to fit calipers off a car :\

Ok so I gave up trying to work out where these came from, dismantled them and measured the stubs. The whole profile where the bearings sit is identical to standard so ordered a set of standard hubs, calipers, and brackets.
The only issue is the threaded portion is very slightly shorter than Trojans standard spec stubs, everything fits up fine but the castle nut cant screw on far enough for the slots to be level with the split pin hole, the axle just protrudes maybe 1mm past the bottom of the slot. I checked with the supplier and the new nuts he supplies are 2mm shorter than what I have, but probably still a fraction off.
Does anyone see a problem with maybe using the friendly grinder the cut the required slot very slightly deeper? Theres still plenty of solid threaded section left. Just would be a hell of a hassle to cut out the stubs and fit new ones in just for an extra 5mm or so length.

Would it not be easier to fit a thinner washer under the nut? Then no modification to the nut required.
Another option might be to machine the bearing recess in the hub so the bearings sit a few mm's further in each side.
If the wheel ever came off and hit someone or something, insurance company will screw you once they see a ground axle nut. Would leave you open to criminal proceedings too if it killed someone. Just something to think about.
