whats the best petrol tank bush fix

Post by Dannz71 »

Recently a mate of mine came down quite hard on a stump in the bush and cracked a weld in his fuel tank and it started to leak, a slow drip I might add however we were planning to be out there for a few days so we didn't want to waste any fuel even though it was a slow leak. So we sorta jerryed it up with a bita tape and some form of silicone shit he had rolling around in the back. Now were normally pretty prepared for most issues in the spares department with hoses and belts tools and bolts etc however we we realized that we weren't prepared for a fuel tank leak and as fuel is pretty vital to a 4x4 I wanted your guys input on the best way to fix a fuel tank in the bush when ya miles from the nearest welder or replacement. What sticks to aluminum or steel the best and doesn't break down under fuel ... temporarily anyway...
cheers

Any type of fast setting epoxy would be good, if you get a small peice of fiberglass matt and apply it with the epoxy it would be even stronger.

I tried this the other day with no luck. had a pin hole on the bottom of the tank and rubbed the bar around for a while trying to get some in the hole but it didn't work at all.

Maybe worth carrying one of these kits?

Knead it. Fixes anything and you can make anything out of it. Made a set of cone washers for a asin hub when we had to fix a blown hub and cv on my mates 80 last weekend. We didn't have any. Worked a treat.
rain, hail, sleet or snow, we go!

Sure will. 2 pack epoxy putty. Once mixed together well, nothing stops it curing. It takes a bit longer in colder climbs. Years ago i used it to fix a corrosion hole in the float bowl of a Honda Civic. It was still holding when I sold it some years later

Cheers,
I keep looking for the loose nut behind the wheel, but I can't find it!!

Ive used soap on cracked alloy diesel tanks on trucks, I thought my boss was pulling my leg when he first told me to do it but it works well. Not permanent tho.
