So the second result on that search link was not a decent answer? If you don't like the responses, then make up your own mind I guess.

Iv'e got one on a suzuki and had it about 18 months.... brought on special at supercheap for $399.

1st or 2nd time out, the lever to change between free and lock fell off somewhere, never to be seen again - so I drilled a hole and put a bolt through it.... apart from that tho, it does alright - quite noisy and not the fastest winch around, but it pulls pretty good.

Was towing a trailer with a quad on it behind my 80 series up a fairly steep, wet grassy incline, lost traction... parked the suzuki at the top and winched both up with no issues.

Cheers,

Jay.

Running one on a Hilux - restored as a budget build winch truck - in fact the winch and rope are over half the value of the truck... It pulled everything we asked of it at the Marlborough winch challenge - and there were a few very hard pulls! VERY slow, and the free-spool still takes a lot of effort, but for the price - it's pretty good value!

Ive got one on my surf ....not used it in anger yet ...only pulled a small tree out with it so far.
But is a little noisy ..am going to throw away the soleniod box it came with & put on a sealed unit then bigger cables to make it more reliable.

I've got one on my Suzuki. It is a Chinese winch so the quality is never going to be great. In saying that though I've never had a problem with it. Before I put it on I pulled it apart and re greased everything so I know it's got quality grease and that everything is put back together nice and tightly so it won't fall apart. It has also got seals between the drum and the gears and motor which is nice to have. I've totally submerged mine and used it while it was totally under water. After that I pulled it apart to find it was still nice and dry on the inside. They are made in the same factory as the tigerz11 winches. So for the price they are a good buy.

x2 Have one on my surf also and its noisiest winch I've heard (turns heads lol) but works great and the only failure I've had was the solenoid which I also replaced with a sealed unit $39 off trademe, no issues with it over the last year.

I also have 1 on my escudo. Slow but reliable. And as long as you use it for self recovery you should ok, and not pulling safaris and landcruisers etc. 6mm plate would be ok depending on the design of your bull bar.

I used 10mm plate on the mistral and it will pull a safari fine... it pulled a bellied safari with a tandem trailer load of fire wood behind it.

IT will struggle at high loads with the little leads feeding the winch/ solenoid etc. but that is what makes them cheap.. not hard to upgrade with some earth cable from a 3 phase arc welder etc.
Waiter...there is a drought in my glass.
