I have a tyre that come off my truck and i was wondering if it would be ok to use as a spare. It has had a gash in the sidewall and has been repaired. It held air fine but i didnt want to use it as an everday tyre incase of when off roading i rip the patch off. It has a patch on the inside of the tyre and on the outside.
What i was wondering if i used a tube with it, would it be suitable to use as a spare than even if the patch gets ripped off i should still have the tube holding air. And as its only a spare hopefully i shouldnt need to use it but you just never know.
Using a tube on a damaged tyre
Re: Using a tube on a damaged tyre
The problem is if the patch rips off and exposes enough area for the tube to poke through. You say there is a patch on the inside as well, this should help prevent the tube being exposed, but I wouldnt like to count on it to be honest.
Have you tried getting the tyre amalgamated? This I would trust fairly well, I have this done one a performance car tyre a long time ago, held well. Not sure if anyone does it still tho, a truck tyre place would be best bet.

Re: Using a tube on a damaged tyre
A good vulcaniser may be able to repair it depending on how bad it is, but using a tube with a patch wont last as the tube will rub on the patch and eventually wear a hole in the tube.
Re: Using a tube on a damaged tyre
Yeah that was my concern the patch rubbing on the tube, i may just have to bight the bullet and buy a new tyre for a spare
seems a shame as there is still good tread on the tyre, ill take it to a truck tyre shop see if they can help

Re: Using a tube on a damaged tyre
ive had the chap at Auckland Tyres up here in Otahuhu vulcanise three of my tyres now
one was punctured by a tee tree and the other two were knifed in a public car park (there was a group of vehicles done)
he fixed them and said they were as good as new structurally just a patch in the lettering on where he had worked. so it will be worth while talking to the local chaps around your ways to get there opinion before buying a new tyre

Yeah will have a ask around, it possibly has already been done by the way your talking how they do it, it looks like it has been melted kind of and a rubber patch put over it, but the patch is starting to come off. The one on the inside is fine though
Re: Using a tube on a damaged tyre
Ive had one of mine vulcanised, dont think they used a patch but it was only a slight tear in the side wall.
You cant tell from looking at it and it hasnt made any difference weather driving on it or not.

vulcanising involves the remelting and setting of the rubber compound with additives added etc to achieve a solid structural repair. there was no patches etc scene on the repairs to my tyres

Re: Using a tube on a damaged tyre
depending how long the gash is, you can get it vulcanised. because its a gash in the sidewall, the cords will have been cut and it will have lowered the structural integrity of the sidewall. putting a patch on a sidewall isnt best practice due to the sidewall flexing all the time, the patch has the tendancy of failing and if it fails while going around a high speed sweeping bend you get the idea. the tube shouldnt rupture due to it sitting against the patch unless the patch is all rough and has started to peel off. but as i said if the gash is quite long the strength of the casing has been taken away due to to many cords being cut
needs more curry
