Safari head job

Hi all
I have a 91 safari 4.2 diesel non turbo,and I have the head off because it sucked up some water and bent 2 rods,I have another block,I was told that you need to replace the head studs when you replace the head gasket and also that there are three types of head gasket,and I have to measure the gap between the piston at TDC and the top of the block can you help DDog.

New head bolts yes head gasket thickness not sure about
Ok if piston protrudes less than 0.118 grade 1 gasket required
If protrudes between 0.118-0.168 grade two required
0.168-or more grade 3 required
89 safari, pto winch, 33x15 simexs. sliders,75mm lift . turbo intercoolered

Interesting about the multiple head gaskets. Do they not just do 3 different sizes, like the TD27's?
Haven't had mine off yet, but when I queried it I was told to get the number off the existing, as there are 3 thicknesses.

Hey Mate
yes replace head bolts,get pistons to top dead centre one at a time ,,,,will help if you can get hold of someone with a dial gauge and base to check height ,if you imagine the gudgeon pin running through the piston take your height on the two sides above the pin ,,,divide by two and that will give you a close enough average,,,,any worries pm here is the info you need for the heights
Look at these specs and that will give you the part number for the required gasket,,shop around and only get a permaseal gasket it wil be a BW610 in a grade 1,2, or 3 head bolt part number HBS042

Yea, thats it. Different thickness's rather than stacking gaskets together to get the thickness if that's what you'd thought.
There's often either drill holes, or nicks in the edge of the gasket (in a non sealing part) to indicate the grade (thickness). Gasket supplier should provide the information to you
