Surf LN61 Coil Front Suspension Questions

Post by suzolla »

Finally removed all the IFS bits from the front of Project Surf-O-Dore
Was going to put the rear springs in the front but not sure that they will give the flex that I want, plus hard to maintain a good approach angle while giving good flex.
Have decided to use 3 links arms and a panard.
Engine will be a V6 Commodore

Question is, what springs are people using in their coil fronts that gives them plenty of flex, what is the free length and how much do they compress. Do you know what the spring rate is.
Do you have any pictures of setup and how much flex do you get.

Thanks in advance for any comments.

Use Range Rover coils and shocks, there is a wide choice of wire sizes to vary spring rates

hi tim, im doing the same to my ln130 surf.. im using rangie springs atm wiv rangerover buckets and mounts.. you'll never get the same amount of flex from coils as leafs..

if its lots of flex your after then go leafs nice nad easy to make too.

umm, coils have much better flex. Yes?

Leafs are easy to set up, but coils will flex much better. You get better approach and departure angles too.

even if your coils dont flex as much you can go faster , and be more stable and keep the thing on the track as with leaves they try and biff you off course.

Coils will out flex leafs by a million miles, if they are done correctly. Setting coils up is a lot harder, beacuse if they don't work the way you want, you have to get some more and keep trying until you get the result you are after. With leafs, you can mix and match different leafs to create a wicked spring pack, however, I have never seen an "off the shelf" leaf spring pack work to a degree that I would call impressive.
