mud tyres for SJ413
mud tyres for SJ413
Ok so i know this subject has been done to death but ive yet to find answers that are specific to my needs.
Ive got a SJ413 and im looking for some new 31" mud tyres. Im not too concerned about how they handle on the road, but I dont want something like simex's. also I dont want to have replace them in 20,000 kms because they are worn out so they have to last OK. I go in mud and sand but I want the performance in the mud to be very good. Budget is in in the $300s per tyre.
I think that should cover most questions.
What do you guys recommend?

Dont know from experience but have hears from several zook owners that federal couragia's are the ducks nuts. I would run them if I wasnt running silverstones

Re: mud tyres for SJ413
id run the trepadors ( maxxis ) over the federals all day every day, ive run on both
Re: mud tyres for SJ413
I run trepadors on my sj410 and they are the bees knees!
Re: mud tyres for SJ413
Running couragias and finding them good. Got a set of 4 for under a grand new recently. seem to be better than the kumho powerguards (old style) that i had first. treps might be better in muddy stuff but would say couragia is a better all rounder on sj's. Only ran treps on my patrol though so not really comparing apples with apples.
Re: mud tyres for SJ413
hmm so far its split down the middle. Have the old Powerguards on at the moment. Its a reasonably well set up wagon, UBZ's old one, just dont want to put something on that wont perform.
How are they for handling on the road and tread wear?

I have Trepadors on the LJ and they are awesome on such a light vechile .
Bag well and after 3k of road driving still have the rubber stuples .
Go really well off road , but struggle a little to clear wet grass at low RPM's
And being a direction tyre you are limited to how you can rotate them , and can't run the same type as a spare .
The Couragia's are a fantastic allround Zuk mud tyre. DB ran them successfully on Weapon at winch challenges .
and good sizes availible as well, but get a bit average once the square edges are gone .
IMHO a 31x10.5" tyre is too wide a tyre for the SJ , makes the steering really heavy and tends to float instead of cutting down for traction.
A 31x9" would be ideal but no one makes then any more in a MT.
If you can afford it I would change to a 16x7 rim , have the centers moved for a bit more offset and run a 245/75/16 (30.6x9") or a 235/85/16 (32x9") Tyre.
Zuk looks great covered in Mud .

Only had em for a month or so. pretty good on the farm so far, which is generally tractor access only in the wet. Not run em through a 4x4 track yet. Road manners are fine, doesn't seem to be overly loose in the wet but haven't had to stop in a hurry either, reasonably quiet and i figure given the light weight of the vehicle they shouldn't wear out in a hurry.

I cant really afford to do that unfortunately,(spent a little bit doing some other bits and pieces on it) so im stuck with 31s.
Is there anything else? or is the general consensus only Trepadors or Federals?
Re: mud tyres for SJ413
I ran Nankang Mudstars for a little while on my Samurai and they worked really well on it, not too noisy on road, drove nice on wet roads and seemed to work pretty well off road. I would agree with UBZ's comments, a narrow tyre is a good thing on a zuk, the best offroad tyres I had on mine were as set of 7" wide SAT's.
Re: mud tyres for SJ413
I ended up getting the Federals because i got them at an insane price, less than $900 for a set. Tried them out yesterday and they are awesome. Thanks for the advise guys.

Re: mud tyres for SJ413
I know this was a wee while ago but when you changed to 31" tyres did you change any of the stock running gear or transfer gear? I have just paid for an SJ413 in Auckland running 31"s but am wondering if the stock gear will be weak? Any thoughts? The truck is on the way down to Christchurch but thought I should prepare before it comes.

A set of transfer case gears will do wonders, google lowrangeoffroad, a set of 4.16 gears would probably do the trick.
