Someone did a table ages ago to show how many kms you had to travel to make it worthwhile owning a diesel. Someone want to redo it?

Not just diesel

From the Ministry of Transport Website
The average 5.9 percent increase in RUC is the same proportion as the increase in fuel excise duty on petrol.

Found here http://www.transport.govt.nz/legislatio ... eases.aspx

Petrol excise duty going up on july 1 too.

New RUC rates can be found here http://www.legislation.govt.nz/regulati ... 78303.html

Diesel cars under 3500kg are going from $48 / 1000km to $53 / 1000km. Which is a 10% increase, 5.9% is the average over all Diesel's. Heavy vehicles were hit hard last year, this time its the lights.

A bloke I do a lot of work for brought a new prado about 5 years ago. He used the factory fuel consumption figures and service cost from toyota. He worked out the cost to run per km and at his annual distance of 25000 km's the petrol was cheaper to run per year. Back them it worked out about 40000 km's a year before the diesel got cheaper. It would probably be a lot more now.

It gets worse....
For those of us on farm reg, the exemption also expires on 1 July!
We can apply for a modified exemption (10 km radius) with a $115 fee per application.
Think I'll just go and buy some RUC's :(

good on ya....

sat down and worked some figures thru on cost of running my ute, 2.8 dt rodeo, i get 700ks to a tank and about $90 to fill it. i do approx 17000 a year.
so taking road user 4.8c/k rego $600 (farking commerical rates), $50 oil filter every 5 k, it cost me $3771 to run, or 23c per k, my V8 fairmont over same distance would cost $4849 or $0.29 cents per k, wifey celica would be $3292 or 19c per k, for the ute to get down to 19c per k i would have to do 320000ks or spend $62000 in fuel and running costs.
this does not allow for injectors or "major" service items, so probably low. to figure out what you "could" save first you have to know what you are comparing to.

The other thing to remember is to compare similar vehicles.
Ie you have a 90 series Prado 3.0ltr diesel, then you need to compare with either a 90 series 2.7 petrol or v6.
When you start getting to 80,100 & 200 series cruisers, GQ & GU patrols etc, it starts to get interesting.
I do recall someone doing the figures on a midsize suv and it was along the 30 000kms mark before the petrol got more expensive.
This is the sort of thing that ultimately affects wage earners hard, as from my point of view all I will do is put my rates up a bit to cover it.

Cheers for the hint.

Checked the screen to see where I was up too. I was 300kms over - opps.

Grabbed 2k worth just to get me through the week until the new ones arrive. Paid for 10k so I can forget it for a few months. That hurts the ratrod fund (not to mention the glow plugs too) and my pocket too.

I save around $1000 in fuel every 10000km by owning a diesel Pajero over a V6 petrol. RUC's definatly included, can't remember about rego though. This doesn't take into account service costs which is around twice as much for me to service the diesel (which is around $60 for oil and filter per service).

Numbers were taken from Fuelly for the petrol and from my truck for the diesel.

Works out for me as long as I keep the truck for a while as the purchase price of the diesel was much higher and I have to keep doing my own services otherwise it would be forking out $250 a service. That would kill it.

Not worth stocking up too much on the Heavys. MoT has this covered, current RUC's expire 1 month in

RUC licences for heavy vehicles will expire one month after the date of the increase. RUC licences for light vehicles (3.5 tonnes and under) will not expire.

Will heavy vehicle operators lose money when their licences expire?

No. Heavy vehicle operators will receive an automatic refund in the form of a credit on any unused portion of the RUC licence when they purchase their new licence.
