Early 80 series brake upgrade

Post by Diorama »

Brakes need an overhaul so thought I might do some upgrades if possible. I have heard that certain later model calipers and rotors are a direct bolt on. Has anyone done this mod. Need to know what parts (part #s would be good) I would need and the best place to get them from.
I already have 16" wheels so won't need to change those.

I have the later mod rotors and callipers on the front of my 80 but left the back alone because I wanted to run 15'' rims. I cant say that I noticed any difference in braking performance with the change. The biggest help was putting in the cheapest pads I could buy and bending the brake bias rod (the truck is lifted). The brake test for a cert was the reason for all this drama. 80 brakes are not good.

Anyone else got thoughts on this. Am I wasting my time upgrading to the later model brakes. I'm running 35" tyres and tow a big boat. My understanding is the earlier model 80's didn't have the 3.5T tow rating due to the smaller brakes. Toyota soon realised this and in 1992 they started bringing the 80 series out with the bigger brakes. Will I notice any difference.

Still haven't got the info needed for this conversion. Can anyone help with what parts need to be changed and what model & year cruiser I have to get them off.

Hi mate, have I got a deal for you :D

I just got a later model 80 rear diff, (with the bigger back brakes I discovered), sitting on the bench to swap into my LJ71 & would rather have the smaller brakes as they'll pull up the Prado no worries & I will be able to fit my 15" rims.

The brakes I've got are in good condition, heaps of meat on the pads even. If you're in range of Rotorua swing by one weekend & we could swap em over. If yours are in need of a rebuild you might have to bring the beers :) Will PM ph number.

Cheers

If it breaks, build it stronger.
If it doesn't break, drive it harder.
