Front Axle removal

Post by NJV6 »

Does anyone know how to remove the front long side axle from the diff housing? Is it just retained by a clip like a cv?

There is far to much movement for my liking (up and down) and there must be a bearing in there somewhere. Broke 1st CV in 9 years 2 weeks ago so having a bit of an overhaul.

Hi Glenn
its held in by a circlip. Unbolt the inner CV from the flange, Get a large slide hammer and pop the axle out. The bearing on my truck is on its way out, I have all the parts at work to fit this weekend, Let me know if you want part numbers prices etc, We are now Mitsy Service and parts agents
Cheers Nick

Excellent. Something strange has been happening in the front end and it may be related to the cv going, it wasn't getting a hard time when it went and I discovered 1 of the bolts missing where the inner cv bolts to the flange and the other 3 were loose and the play in the bearing.

I know they were tight as they are one of the things I routinely check.

I will probably price some parts, my wincaps parts program is not opening for me at the mo, I after after some oil seals as well and might put genuine tie rods on again to see if I can get more than 6 months out of one. I got some genuine bits out of the states last time I was doing bushes and it worked out just over half (landed) as to what it was going to be from southern automobiles!!

Hey Glenn, you might remember I had some fun pulling this out a while back: http://www.offroadexpress.co.nz/Forums/viewtopic.php?f=24&t=31176.

The trouble is the long-side axle housing is just full of air (and crap). There's just a dust seal keeping stuff out. So the socket that the axle shaft clips into gets a bit corroded, making popping it out out a real pain. Plus there's no decent way to get heat to the socket since it's hidden inside that axle tube.

In the end I used a prybar to preload the flange. Then went at it with the slide hammer - I gave it everything I had.

Check your diff mount bushes while you've got that shaft out too...

Nice one. Did your axle come out easy enough? Haven't got a slide hammer.

Hi I couldn't find the slide hammer at work, I just levered on the flange and smacked it several times with a rather large hammer from behind and the bearing fell apart and the axle came out. The truck was on a hoist so I had the luxury of being able to get under the truck and smack the flange from behind, It would be a lot harder doing it on the ground with no slide hammer.

Cheers, I'll get some bits and go back to it. But its mobile again.

Dam clutch release bearing is grumbling again, the 1st one (original) lasted about 7 years and this replacement one is grumbly after only 18 months!! grizzle grizzle grumble grumble.

On another note, Is there meant to be a brass bush between the outer cv and the alxe shaft? Its on the axle where it slides into the stub axle - Mine didn't have this, maybe I have missed it years ago when putting it all together? The diff's been out a few times with changing ratio's, diff lock (twice) etc

I should have a spare brass thrust washer that goes on the outer cv shaft here.
