The waimak is pretty good. There's water filled, rutted tracks scattered all over the north side of the river. I've been out there a few times.

Your not supposed to go just anywhere on the Waimak though:

http://ecan.govt.nz/quick-answers/Pages ... -park.aspx

In the Waimakariri River Regional Park four-wheel drive vehicles are permitted in most of the river bed with some restrictions from McLeans Island east. These areas are fenced.

The best areas are river roads west of Weedons-Ross Road on the south side of the Waimakariri River (with the exception of The Willows picnic site at the end of Thompsons Rd) and west of Harris Rd on the north side of the Waimakariri River.

There are no designated areas for 4WD use at the moment. However ECan is currently working with Combined Four-wheel Drive Clubs to establish an area on the north bank of the river.

Please stay off the stopbanks and groynes as they are easily damaged by motor vehicles. During the breeding season for riverbed birds from September to January, please stay off open shingle areas as the nesting birds are easily disturbed and very difficult to see. If you do use these areas stay on vehicle tracks.

For more information please go to the Parks and Reserves website.

You could also try to drive anywhere around Avonside, Bexley, Queenspark, and some prats of Burwood. :P :P

If you have a fishing or hunting licence you can pay $30 and get a key to the gates on the north side of the waimak. Or just know the secret tracks on how to get in there!
