Obviously at least 50% of a vehicles capability is determined by the operator.

But yes, a standard RRC has very good offroad credentials.

It takes a skilled operator to manage a RRC properly.

This is my dream Range Rover. You have probably seen the thread. Its a 2 door with GQ Patrol mechanicals grafted in. So TD42 5spd, part time 4wd etc.

Well no its not because its still got rover suspension and chassis (still the best factory 4wd suspension) and the stunning looks and comfort of a classic rangie.

Mind you I guess with owning a daihatsu you wouldn't really be interested ride comfort, looks or offroadability?

Ride comfort- not too bad with some decent seats. Looks- well beauty is in the eye of the beholder, personally I think rangies are pretty damn ugly. Offroad ability- Even I am suprised where the damn thing goes, it's at least equal to if not better than my suzuki and the suzuki had a rear locker which the Daihatsu doesn't.

'zactly. I dont think you would need to p*ss around pegging diffs etc on that beast!

It was WAAAYY ahead of its time in 1970. The International Scout and Ford Bronco had paved the way for 4x4 coil suspension. It was the UKs first luxury SUV and first coil sprung 4x4.

The factory seats are great! Ugly?! Its f***ng beautiful.

you have to remember practically everything is copied from rovers,
sit any coil sprung gq near a rr,disco or defender and they look practically identical,
the point is a lot of lr owners respect that lr was the innovator and that the Japanese are the ultimate copycats,
but they are awesome developers as well.
So a LR with jap bits in it makes perfect sense (to a non purist)
you still pay homage to the original 4x4xfar and also get to utilise some well developed parts that are simply a little easier to get hold of and
possibly a little more fit for the task.
also its the easiest way to get a modern 4x4 on a vintage rego @ $150 a year

Agreed, and this is where it gets difficult.

The first LR concepts were built on a Willys chassis (centre steer)
The LR was influenced HEAVILY by Jeep. (you could say copy)
Chief Engineer Maurice Wilks OWNED a Willys! It was his daily driver and he felt it needed 'some refinement.'

An often ignored fact is that Land Rover purchased & imported two 1st gen Ford Broncos during the research & development of the original Range Rover. This was the worlds first SUV (and first coil sprung SUV) that came several years earlier than the RRC. Climb under one (if you can find one) and you'll see the front suspension design is remarkably similar.

The Japanese have shown incredible innovation over the years. Look at their drivetrain/suspension systems, engine designs, assembly methods etc.

The RR is innovative in its own right, full time 4x4, serious offroad capability etc., but IMO The notion that 'LR is the innovator and Japanese are copycats' is what creates this silly divide. Everything good draws inspiration from something else.

The Land Rover drew inspiration from the Jeep. If there was no Jeep there would be no Land Rover. The Land Cruiser drew inspiration from both the Jeep and the Land Rover. The early Patrol drew inspiration from the Land Cruiser. The free market system sorted out the rest.

doesn't matter anyway pigeon holing someone by dragging a few words from something they've typed will never really tell you much about them.
I like my rover copied from a jeep with suspension and diffs from a Toyota and drivetrain from a Nissan.
my first car was a s2a with cruiser diffs a 250 falcon motor and an auto,
i'll always likely have one and it'll will always be a bastard

There are not many 4 wheel drives designed to be a tractor. Mine has the welded draw bar as part of the chassis and is complete with a 10 spline PTO and belt pulley which is very rare because only 400 were made in 1948 with 10 splines. This was a stuff up because all agricultural gear is 6 spline so they had to be modified.

From 1949 it spent its first 10 years on the Hore station at Kyeburn using the PTO to drive the Shearing sheds etc. They might have been based on a Jeep chassis but the Land Rover was being promoted as utility vehicle that could do all farm work from ploughing to cutting wood , cutting hay ete etc so they wern't really just a copy of the Jeep

This is how smooth the 1600 engine runs

Full credit, good sir. You are older and wiser and I respect that.
That is a good point, the LR was an incredibly versatile machine.
For what its worth, I believe the LR was inspired by the Jeep, personally I wouldn't say copy. :)
