Help with Toyota hilux

Post by Clydeguy »

Hey there, I own a 1985 Double cab Hilux running a 253 under the hood. Currently it sits on 31" tyres but i am wanting to upgrade to 35" tyres, what gear must i upgrade/run on my truck for it to be able to run 35's successfully?
Any help much appreciated!

i re drilled my spring mounts so axel sat 30mm further foward modified my tramp rod (top of diff to chassie) and steering arm got threaded to allow adjustment the had 2" lift springs in the front and longer shackels in the back and also a 2" body lift i ran 35s only rubbed slightly on full lock full articulation.

But in doing that u need extendend front break lines cross over steering. Drop front leaf mounts down 30 or so mm extended front and rear shackles. Longer shocks. Im slowling gathering the parts to do this to my hilux

to run 35's successfully offroad you'll have to move the front axle forward, do a 2inch spring lift and a 2 inch body lift minimum.

Rear hilux leaf spring up front will move front diff forward about 1.5" and lift it about 1.5"

Yes i've done one or two of them :lol:
It's not just as simple as a 30mm block uder the spring mounts and throwing the rears up front.
To run 35's (successfully) As I stated the front axle has to move forward and the body upward as to leave room for the axle to articulate without the big tyres hitting while flexing and turning at the same time...
RUF have a few things to consider;
If you drop the front spring mounts you should extend the front shackles as well otherwise the kingpin angle isn't right.
If you don't do a hi-steer conversion and put an IFS powersteer box on then you have to shorten the drag link and extend the a torque rod on the diff, this means you still have to use the infamous J arm....which will eventually break.
If you go to the effort of RUF, then you may as well do it properly, fit an IFS box, Extend the shackels, drop the front crossmember, and you can then do away with all the other problems :wink:

If you're real serious about finding out the in's and out's of putting rears up front go to pirate 4x4xand look in the 4-runner forum and search RUF :wink:
http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/12-toyota-truck-4runner/

RUF has been thrashed to death all over the world....the internet is your friend :mrgreen:
