Tatra 8x8 813

Post by reesto »

I am buying this in Germany for €30,000 it is a Tatra 813 8x8. It has an aircooled 17.6 litre desel V12, it is 2.5m wide, 3.7m tall and weighs 8,000kgs - is this road legal in NZ? Are we able to use this offroad or do you require permit in New Zealand. I have used these before and they are very comfortable in Germany.

Dunno about the rules and legalities, but I have always wanted to see one of these in the flesh! Plenty of awesome videos on youtube in truck trials etc.

Awesome bit of machinery!

last production was 1982 so yes they can be imported and made road legal. I suggest you import it on the grounds of special interest military vehicle. Will require a class 4 licence to drive.

If you can get it in here, what were your plans for it?
It is going to have some issues fitting down most of our common 4wd areas,
which would mean mostly road use. And apart from EQ damaged roads in Christchurch, the majority of our sealed road network is in pretty good shape.

Cool looking rig 8)
Ugly is a state of mind..... and the state of my truck!

I would check this very carefully. I am aware of an earlier ex German army ambulance that could not be made road legal because it was left hand drive as the Tatra will be. The owner tried for years to get it road legal and eventually gave up.
If it is road legal in Germany you can drive it here, for a maximum of 1 year. You can drive it off road, no problem

Thank you for advice on this. We are planning to have the vehicle shipped to Australia and then to NZ and other destinations once we have it serviced and modified in Czech over the winter.
