Re: 87 series Landcruiser
I've drilled out the stud holes on my knuckles and inserted 12mm stainless thread inserts. Then I just used 12mm Cap screws insted of studs. I had to retighten them a couple of times but now they are staying tight. However I have a pair of six shooter to go on when I get time

Have to fix a couple little things after last weekend.. bent this and that..
But as you all know things can horribly wrong and just when you least expect it..

So I took the parts to work and cut 8mm key ways, should give it more strength as its not just driving off the studs.
I've heard about this but wondered what they looked like.
What a great idea!
Cool thread too Big.

Starting to think I might need my auto for the reefton trip... and seeing as I've just got all the bits I need to plug and play it... mmmmm might be a great idea..
Camera works real good.. apart from a few fine lines through the screen.. I guess ya get that when it's a budget model..

Re: 87 series Landcruiser
Well just did a few things for maintenance like made a new ground anchor..
sick of bending the one I had.. so upped the anti a bit..
Started with this..

then ended up with this..
Poor navi..

Might have to go out for a skid somewhere to try it out..
Also fixed the leaking hydrofan bit that attaches to the actual fan.. the O ring was fubar..
No pic of that..
Thats it for now

Re: 87 series Landcruiser
Hi everyone yet again.. Had a bit of drama with my gearbox and clutch due to basiclly having a lot of river crossings we down here.. and it's on the floor now.. and the bits are going to put up for sale..
I only have just started to have small problems with water but I really dont need that for competing in so im going to put my auto in that I have been putting together for the last 2 months..
bits from when I pulled it
Gearbox.. it has had a rumble in it since I've had it and still going strong..

and when I seperated it this fell out

thought holy cow.. about a cup of water..
then I checked to see if everything was ok..

Doesn't look too bad..
so Off with the bellhousing etc..
then on the floor.. part are actually in good nick..

So now all I need is the bolts to the flexiplate and spacers for the auto then it's getting put in.. along with a new loom
and the electrical all setup again.. shouldn't take too long..
Also Im going to have to shorten my rear drive shaft and get another for the front..(Anyone care to help here ?) then I've ordered some goodies off amazon.. so I'll see how that goes..
Ill have a plan if it's not here before reefton..lol fingures crossed..
Well there will be more now later this week and I';ll be moving along fast as I only have 8 weeks..

Re: 87 series Landcruiser
OK I have taken the plunge and started the Auto swap.. seeing as things were getting a little sticky..
So first was to de loom the ol girl.. no pictures as I forgot to take some..
Had to drop the top off her again.. but only the very top bit.. All the electrics were pulled from cab into engine bay.. nothing to show for that but seeing as I pulled ALL the electrics.. thought I'd check the loom I had against the new one to make sure things are going to swap over easy..
Only thing I have to cut off my loom and add was the AFM plug as that was missing..
Anyway after about 10 hours I had repaired and installed the new full loom onto engine and thought I'd jerry rig the electrics to make sure it would start..
After a few curses and finding that a couple wires had broken when I pulled it through.. it started..
. Here is a couple pics of the setup..

and

So all and all a good weekend swapping over some of the more important stuff getting ready for the auto..
more later cheers

Re: 87 series Landcruiser
Being a snow day and I cancelled work as too dangerous..
I have started extending the ecu plugs etc to make them long enough to go into cab where I pulled them from..
So far after 4 hrs.. 1 plug and diagnostic ( ODB1 ) extended..
still have 2 more plugs.... and im running out of wire..
I'll pop a pic after lunch

Re: 87 series Landcruiser
lol.. not much to show.. but I'll finish what im doing then get some pics up.. Took all day about 9hrs to cut and splice in about 800mm to lengthen the loom.. Glad I had a shit day to do it otherwise it might have taken a couple weeks in the weekends..lol
Few goodies have started to arrive too..

Re: 87 series Landcruiser
Well seems some pics are in order so here goes..
This is the mess you get when you start to try and make an extended loom out of other bits and pieces as well as the old loom..

Then I got the loom sorted it ready for taping up and running a bit of protection around it..

And all will end up in the cab out of harms way, all connected to these..

so all and all Im hoping to have it started tomorrow night once I have connected everything again..
Then the actual auto can be bolted up..
That's it.. more tomorrow

Re: 87 series Landcruiser
Well loom all connected for a quick start and started easier than before in the past.. maybe something is connected proper like..
Anyway this turned up today and I have to say.. you can't buy what I paid here for one of these.. this is awesome..

and

and finally

Now all I have to do is lengthen a couple wires to make it tidy which i'll do over the weekend and start putting the tranny in..

Re: 87 series Landcruiser
Well as some might know I'm in the throws of putting a auto in.. lotsa reasons but for reliability mostly in water etc..
Anyway things are progressing slowly..
but we're getting there..
Here are a couple pics for those interested..
Trans bolted to engine

and transfer adaptor also looking for the clearance's for pto shaft etc

and drive shaft clearance etc

And some goodies..

More later tomorrow when transfer bolted up
That's it for now

Amazon does those for a good price too. Looking at that as an option for my 350trans (going to have the cooler under the vehicle not up front so have to provide airflow).
Sweet build too by the way.
Re: 87 series Landcruiser
Auto running now as it is.. no driveshaft's but is working..
So need a tranny mount coming from d_b , levers to work through,
Cooler is mounted and runs mean
works a real treat..
so whats left is
Drive shafts
PTO shaft
lever for pto
4x4 engagement system.. not sure about that yet..
Take for a thrash..

Re: 87 series Landcruiser
Looking good Big!
You will enjoy the Auto for sure. After getting used to an auto for the last 18months I don't know if I could go back to a manual especially when driving technical stuff or rockcrawling

Re: 87 series Landcruiser
here's some pics as promised..don't mind the use of new an old... I don't have a bender and the new bends couldn't bend the way I wanted them too
so I had no choice.. ALso don't look at the weldin too much..
new welder and I'm trfying to get it sorted..
Just has too much powa..
OLD SETUP

NEW SETUP

and

Changed from passenger side to driver side as there was just no room.. im talking about 5mm clearance from anything going down the chassis rail..

Clocked the muffler to give the tranny cooler lines some relief..

Last time I just ended the exhaust in front of the rear axle but when in water I always felt that the system was just working too hard.. so up it goes.. about 5mm clearance here too..

I just have to make up some support brackets but it's essentially done..
Also noting that due to the extra length the note has changed slightly..
You have to appreciate that this setup is all above chassis rail and cannot be seen or damaged from anything coming up or squashing it.. It could have been done easy just running below..lol
It's double heat rapped as it's about 10-15mm below the floor pan and i't just gets too hot..
More later..

Well I'm almost ready for Reefton.. Just a road test, breather for auto.. grease her up and thrash it..
Spent the last few nights trying to work out why the cooling ecu wasn't doing it's thing.. seems I've burned it out..lol but lucky I had a spare in the spare parts depo..
now working a treat..
Might even give her a oil change..

Re: 87 series Landcruiser
Tranny is coming out..
it's got shit through it so.. Does anyone have one reasonably close to me.. Queenstown.. prefer one not been opened..and in good condition.. I'm going to take it out to inspect to see what has failed.. if it's ok I'll reassemble the original box for Reefton.. otherwise looks like I might miss it..
but we'll see..

Well as the stars align and the moons have parted.. The 4wd God has gifted me a new old tranny..
So pulled the old and all the assorted bits by 2pm.. had a drive around and bingo.. it's now 11pm and new tranny is in apart from driveshafts and pto shaft + oils..
Tranny looked ok as in the old oil.. but's it's going to get a full flush etc..
Fingers crossed it works..
otherwise plan B will have to be executed..

Well.. I pulled the tranny that I built for my truck to bits to check if there was any failures of any description.. nada wrong..
so It's been cleaned down yet again ready to be put back in.. Gotta love that..NOT

Anyway I was thinking about the space I have used for my build..
and thought I'd chuck a couple pics up showing ya all what I've done in the space I have..
Lets just say space is a premium..

and

and finally

Not much to work with..lol.. tranny will go in over the next couple weeks as I have time now..

A messy shed is a busy shed. At least you can get your truck in there
