First time 4wd diesel owner today 1992 safari lwb td42

Post by Kelvtd42 »

Hi I'm a new owner. Just brought a 1992 nissan safari manual y60 td42

Brought for $4000 some issues need looking at first
Rust on sunroof
Brownish radiator fluid
Handles like a boat
Low speed shake
Speedo sit on 180 and moves up and down when running
Central locking not working

Going to turn this info a offload sleeper so need to make it reliable

Any suggestions and support are welcome. In term of my own knowledge, it is very basic this is my first diesel and 4wd

Thanks guys

those issues are std safari ones.
Flush the radiator and new antifreaze. Also would to pay to check the water pump.
Boat handling easy fix. Springs and shocks are easy to sort. Pay not to go above 2-3 inch lift or it affects the handling to much without big $$$$ being spent.
Wheel shake will be worn bushes . But would check wheel balance first then its just process off elimination.
Speedo will need sparky attention. Normally needs the solder on back of dash cluster resoldered

If you do the pump and coolant , bang a new genuine nissan thermostat in it (there only 30 buks ) also doesnt hurt to get a tank taken of the radiator and flushed (100 buks ) and renew the viscous fan oil

Hey thanks for your reply guys.
So the sunroof has been quoted at around $1000 for new sheet metal work rust cut out and painted over.

Also as I have no tools or knowledge to do the service and one you can recommend in Auckland to just give the car a service and general look over. Really want to just freshen the car up and make it last another 20 years.

Any recommendation in a sparky with the knowledge to do this ?

I'm in Akl

Many thanks

Depends on which part of Auckland you are. North, South, East or West?
Can recommend several places but don't want you running all the way south when you are up Rodney way.

Then Central Motors in Pollen Street Grey Lynn is a good place to start. Garry is the guys name. A Jeep man and 4wd'er so handy to know.
He can also give you assistance with price on the rust repairs.
Its hard to know if the quoted price is reasonable until you have seen what the extent of the rust is.

I know of a Jeep roof that had rust repairs done and that cost $2.5k so $1,000 doesn't sound too bad if it includes paint.
