Noticed this on the ute today.
Gut dropped when I first seen it. but Thanks skid for the advice.
Seems all well it hasnt cut any sidewall Chords so to speak but have noticed some very thin white thread about 0.5mm thick that is impregnated in the tyre about 1mm or so deep.
Any ideas on what it is?

That's probably a nylon sidewall/tread ply. Pretty sure you can get a patch vulcanized over the top but you'd want to check the legality of doing that in case the warrant man doesn't like it.

So youre saying that the "chords" are only really thin white threads?

Yeah, it'll probably be one of the nylon plies.

be the sidewall cords, if ya warrent guy sees them then its a instant fail. a vulc should sort it but if the nylon is cut the integrity of the tyre can be compromised

its all good and well everybody saying to go get it vulcanised
but I'm curious to see some of the vulcanised repairs they have seen, coz in my opinion most vulcanised repairs to the outside of the tyre leaves a very noticable amount of rubber which is a sure fire way to attract the WOF man to your tyre
if you are all saying to vulcanise in the inside, then how does this fix the cut on the outside

What does it matter if it leaves a horrid patch look on the outside of the tyre if its legal? Sure, might not look great (rotate tyre to the other side so its on the inside maybe) but atleast its cheaper than a new tyre, assuming it is infact legal, but if its not legal, a tyre place wont do it and refit it to your vehicle as they will then become liable for any accidents.

if the vulcaniser is good then it should be hard to tell on the outside if it has had a vulc repair. i got a tyre vulced and you have to look real hard to tell as its been buffed back.

Cheers guys, I've had professional advice from forum members and tyre shop personnel and they seem to think the chords are not cut. I'm picking its a preliner for the chords? I'd be very surprised if Kumho put their chords so close to the surface. it'll make as much sense as moulding the tread then wraping the belt over it, especially for a mud tyre? these have only 1mm of rubber before I could see the small white threads. had to get a magnifying glass to see them properly.
Anyways I was asking if anyone knew what they were but he verdict seems to be chords.
I'll have the "official" verdict when I take it in for a warrant in a couple of months.
