Removing stripped bolt
Removing stripped bolt
Wondering if anyone can help, I've gone to tighten my wheel bearings up on my Holden Rodeo and found I have 4 of 6 rounded off hub bolts (freewheeling hub)
They are m8 cap screws, the two that were good were near seized in there!!
I've got new bolts just need best way to get them out?
Cheer

Re: Removing stripped bolt
No I don't but will get one,
Is that the best way to deal with a seized bolts aswell?

Re: Removing stripped bolt
Weld a nut onto the end, or if they arnt very tight if you can get a grinder in there to groove a line in them, use a big flathead to turn them like a screw.
Otherwise if you can find a spanner like this they are very hanndy for stripped nuts/bolts

Re: Removing stripped bolt
That tool won't work as these no room around the cap screw and I doubt a screwdriver will work these things are pretty tight in there, I had to swing on a breaker bar to get the two good ones out
Bloody people who tighten things to tight

Re: Removing stripped bolt
cut a cross in the top and I bet a phillips on a manual impact driver will start to undo them, If you can borrow a mig stick a nut on if not how bout an arc and some 6mm ish flat (round 20 sq) on its edge then wiggle it with a 12inch adjustable? If it breaks off then just stick it back on - by the last 1 you be gd at it. easy outs should be the last resort - I still have a few more options

Cap screws are high tensile and if you can drill them you will be extra lucky to drill them straight , don't unless you know what you're doing use Easy Outs or you will have the easy out broken off inside the already out of line drill hole. Soak the bolts with a good quality penetrating fluid. Get a drift, round bar and if nothing else use a socket extension , place on the head of the cap screw and give a good heavy smack with a hammer( it's got no friends, a decent smack is better than several light ones) this will do two things, it will help free up the threads and will burr the end of the hex over so now the allen key will fit better, might need a couple of blows. You could also try a cold chisel on the edge of the cap screw at the right angle so that you are using the cold chisel and hammer to turn the bolt. If this doesn't get them out and you have gas, a quick and I mean quick red hot on the end of the cap screw, let it cool and try the above methods.

Re: Removing stripped bolt
If you can get hold of torq drive sockets you can bash in a T45 as they are fractionally bigger and bite in well.
Re: Removing stripped bolt
any trace of locktite on the 2 you removed by any chance? If so a gas plant will cook it off the others, as above red hot
will do it

Re: Removing stripped bolt
Another trick I was taught is to find a ahort bolt that will fit inside the cap screw and then very carefully weld it in with the arc welder and then use the new bolt head and the added heat to undo it

Re: Removing stripped bolt
Are the hubs aftermarket terrain tamer hubs, if so you could well be in for a fight
My experiance with them was th weld a nut over the top as it does two things as the same time
One it produces heat which helps lots and then two you can also use a spanner not a stupid bloody allen key
The t/t hubs use a real slow tapered shaft as part of the bolt design and all said and done its a crap idea
Imho
It not .... As you were...

Re: Removing stripped bolt
Just original hubs, going to try the torx bit idea and then the cold chisel
No sign of locktite
Cheers for the ideas fellas

Re: Removing stripped bolt
If all else fails use a die grinder to grind off the heads then remove the hub. This will release the tension on the threads and hopefully allow them to be undone with a pair of visegrips.
Re: Removing stripped bolt
Smack the torx in tight and use an impact wrench on it while leaning on it hard.
Dont follow me. i'll get stuck and need a tow..
Re: Removing stripped bolt
Got the t45 torx bit, but was too small, got a cold chisel aswell and finally got them off!
Thanks for the help and ideas
