Friction modifer in your TC?

Post by Bubba »

Reading on the fourms... Do you guys ever use Mopar friction modifer with your TC fluid (NV247)?

So much info out there...

No, but use a special fluid that is Mopar only. Unlike 231s, these TCs don't take ATF 4.

Thanks TJ, thats where I found the thread, there was lots of flaming and abuse but thats not to say he didn't have a valid point. It's almost like they felt threatened by the suggestion, God damned unamerican to add anything to a Mopar product, even if it's another Mopar product!

I feel I need to aplogise for asking so many questions but I'm getting the bug. There is just soooo much info out there

The older NV249 (in older Grand Cherokees) had a viscous coupler that often wore out and caused problems.

Grand Cherokees with Quadra Drive system have NV247 transfer case that has a progressive coupler. It is a more robust design. Its Mopar part number 05016796AA available from the dealer. I can't remember how much it was for, but it only takes 2 quarts (was only a few dollars).

Other than power steering, transmission and transfer case fluids, all other fluids and parts can used from a reputable aftermarket manufacturer. For diffs I have been using Penrite Pro Gear 80W-140 in both the Jeeps.

As for the coolant, it is recommended to use a HOAT coolant. Valvoline Zerex G05 works great. I have used it in both my Jeeps without any problems at all. You can get this from SuperCheapAuto.

BTW, what year is your Overland?
