Noise in rear diff

Post by fash »

Hey all.

The rear diff in my sj413 has decided to start making a reasonably noise on deceleration and when its out of gear, its sort of like a clicking noise as its spinning and slows down when the speed drops. Can anyone help me with what it might be?
(kind of hard to describe the noise, bit like somthing in the spokes of a push bike but a deeper sound)

Note: has a Lockrite in the rear

My Lokka (auto locker similar to Lockrite) rear diff clicks when one wheel turns faster than the drive shaft, ie when turning.
Apparently it will also happen if the tyres are different sizes (due to wear?) you may want to check that.
You could also take the diff head off and check the clearances inside the Lockrite are within specification, the springs are all there and that the teeth on the diff locker are not worn.

makes a different clicking noise when turning, its always made that. Tyres are the same size as they are less than a week old. Wouldn't teeth wearing be a gradual thing? This just decided to start making noise on sunday night. Took it to mechanic to have looked, the universal joint was on its way out, they thought it might be that. Had that replaced and still making the noise.

The instructions that came with my locker state that new tyres can be different sizes.

Did the noise start when then new tyres went on?

If yes you may want to check they have equal pressure and also have the same circumference, which you can check by measuring their height. From my school days pi x diameter = circumference, os you just need to check the diameters are the same.

noise started about 4 days after the tyres went on, but i will check out the tyre measurements in the morning to make sure they are the same

Different tyre pressure also can make tyres different sizes, also an easy check.

ok, checked the tyre heights and pressures and both rears are the same. 765mm in diameter and both 28psi.

Its not the tyres then, if the noise is coming from the diff you might have to look inside the diff and check clearances and for worn parts

i'd be jacking it up and checking the lokka is functioning properly, my guess would be a broken spring or two in the lockright

Ok, it made a loud noise this morning and now its clunking most of the time, think I need a new diff. Does anyone know where I can get a 3.9 ratio NT diff head?

I have a pair of complete diffs if you're interested, would give you some spares in case you break something. $200 for the pair.
