Turbo advice/help needed

Post by zukmeista »

I want to fit a turbo to my 2.8L Daihatsu Rugger so I have aquired a factory turbo setup (exhaust/intake manifolds and turbo) but the turbo is completely stuffed so I am trying to find a turbo that will suit the motor. Not fussed about the manifold flange as I can adapt something to suit. Ideally I would like to run about 10-15psi and it would be nice if it would on boost by 1500rpm. I intend to run a front mount air-air intercooler. I have been looking on trademe but not knowing much about turbos I am a bit lost. Not keen on some crappy chinese turbo either because I am a fan of buy once, buy right. Would rather buy a secondhand turbo of reputable quality eg garrett.

Just my view but I have a 2.8 litre non turbo Hilux, if I wanted more power I would drop a Holden V6 or Toyota V8 under the bonnet rather than muck about with turboing an old (in my case 24 years old and 335,000km engine).

Wouldnt knock any of the chinese stuff, some of the "copies" ive heard good things about. The thing with 2nd hand is yea it may be built to high quality, but if its not maintained its gunna last just as long as a cheap peice of crap.

Terrano ones arnt too bad, you can usually find them for around 300 for a decent one, problem is you can buy a brand new turbo for around 5 or 600 (cheaper brand)

If you cant find a diesel one to suit, get one from a car with about half the capacity (if you can find one)

i.e youd be looking for a car thats between 1.3L and 1.6L

The current range of Masterpower turbos are good if you wish to get a NEW turbo.
any garrett turbo (small enough) in good condition will last ages for you.(source from nissan cars).
Also a turbo from a mitsi lancer GSR 1.8litre(tdo4) will work too. They are pretty reliable.

For a motor that size a tdo4 off a subaru forrester etc would give you all the grunt you need. Common, cheap and reliable. And easy to get rebuild kits for.
Ran a tdo5 on my safari and had no probs at all and produced good smooth boost really quick.

you can buy a brand new one of those for around 300 US, off ebay:

http://www.ebay.com/bhp/ct12b-turbo

Scroll down a little and youll find it

Or theres a rebuild kit for $70 US.

Or heres a brand new terrano one for about the same:

After looking at pics of 1KZ turbos I don't think one of those will work because the wastegate actuator is mounted on the compressor housing which prevents it from being rotated and I would need to rotate it to make it work. The Lancer one is the same. I need something that I can rotate the compressor housing on to suit the piping arrangements.
Here is a pic from google to show the manifold setup. Looking at the front of the motor the manifold turbo flange is at a 45deg angle to the head sort of like this /

I just made up a bracket to suit when i spun the housings(exhaust and compressor) when itfitted the tod5 to the safari. At first i thought thats never gunna fit but after sussing out a plan it fitted easy as. You'd fit atdo4 in there easy as. Heaps off room.

Ok I have found something that looks like it might work, all the pipes are pointing in the right direction relative to the manifold flange, according to the ad it is off a 4g63t which is a 2L petrol, TDO4. Not sure if it will be too big though?
