ev0's 110

Post by ev0lution »

Having done a few adventures with DieselBoy, UBZ, and 4x4Amb, it was about time I bit the bullet and got myself a Land Rover...

Not being as mechanically minded as the others this was a big call but its on the bucket list so nows the time!

I intend to build it out in a similar way to DB and 4x4ambs with the rear sleeping quarters etc.

SO here it is as I got it...

Not too bad condition for living in the Marlborough sounds for the last 10 years, a few little niggles and issues to be sorted.

First up was the broken bonnet stay catch. The broken part I found in the truck still so that was a bonus.

A trip up to DieselBoys to inspect the truck soon had him finding a bit of alloy to fix it up. And so it begins!

That night the stripping began. First, make sure it fits in the garage!

Ripped the rear out:

The roof especially at the front was a bit caved in from 'heavy snow'... the footprints on the roof tell a different story.

Removed the head lining, the front area was quite damp up top, a bit of condensation, and the cardboard part was pretty soaked and mouldy, most likely the biggest contributor to the damp smell inside! Wonder if there is a leak somewhere..

As you can see the braces are bent at the front and come away from the roof itself.. some gentle manipulation should hopefully get it back into some sort of reasonable shape...

Next morning finished removing the interior, washing and waterblasting what I could and sanding back some surface rust areas and rust proofing them. There are a couple of areas in the doors to be fixed more substantially over the coming week tho. Must figure out the easiest way to remove the glue from the carpet areas... (glue back over it with the new stuff...!?)

And made a start on sanding back and repainting the seat frames for the front seats, battery and tool box covers, and other general bits that need touching up

Enough work for one day, next is some minor rust repairs in the front footwell, and find some cheap marine or vehicle carpet for the seat box before i put the seats back in.

This is kind of where I want it to end up, minus the exterior rollcage...

It had/has a bit of a rattle ahen driving around 50-60km/h. We thought it might have been the front brake stone guards, so after some manipulation, test drive, more manipulation, test drive, and completely removing them and test driving again, the rattle was still there.

After a bit of research and playing around, found the front driveshaft flange bolts were loose.

Have tightened those up but as its without a seat I havent been able to test drive it to confirm it's the source of the rattle... fingers crossed!

Day Two:

Headed out to get some marine carpet and glue/industrial double sided tape to start the front.

Got the seat box done and put the seats back in.

Waiting for some sound deadener to arrive before finishing off the front area.

A quick test drive and the rattle appears to have disappeared after tightening the flange bolts... :)

Day 3:

Finished off the seat bases, final trimming and fitting of seat box carpet, and got some new stainless nuts and bolts for around the bottom of the seat box, I broke a few pulling them off they were that rusted.

Got the wire brush out and then sanded the rust areas in the footwells, mostly just light surface rust so no major issues there, then coated with rust kill paint. Wait for that to dry and do a few more coats before putting the sound deadener down and reinstalling mats.

After a sand and coat:

And the seats back in, cleaned up the centre console, the bottom was manky as, relined with marine carpet:

Might rip the seat covers off at some stage and either wash or replace them, but thats down the track a bit, getting it driveable is the main focus for now!
