7mge -----> Surf

Post by Jafa »

Well its been such a long time since I spent any time on the old forums, but I think I'm back ...again... Been so busy at work, just had no time. average 75 hrs per week for that last year or so! Finally got a "boy" to train up so my workload should be much lighter now....hopefully.
Anyways things have changed around here too I see....not many of the old crew left on ORE now..!? Whats happened to Steve? I miss his SAS everything attitude!
I have just stared to get busy in the shed again, picked up an '84 Surf nice and cheap but has a dirty ole 3Y in it, so whats a man to do?...stuff the 7mge I had lying around that was going to be my winch challenge engine, into it and plop the 1UZFE into the race truck, with the intention of using the Surf as a tow wagon for the winch truck, sounds like a plan to me!!

Here goes!

The new Surf

The bad ole 3y 2 litre petrol lump

In with a new heart!
More pics to come. O yeah, Bruce Hughes' 2005 bodied Prado/Surf/cruiser is up here at Autokraft for a couple of weeks so I'm gonna shoot down tomorrow and get a pile of pics

Well i missed Bruce's truck
Got the engine mounts done

Image

Image

I was a little worried about the lack of room between the steering box and the pwr steer pulley, but a shorter pwr steer belt helped that

Image

A few pics of the new radiator cross member and fan mount/shroud

Image

Image

Image

Also a shot of the clutch slave cyl, which is a 2L diesel one and the hardline is the 3Y one I think

Image

The remote pwr steer reservoir mounted on the inner guard and plumbed in using various 2L,3Y and 7M lines. Had to get a new high pressure side line from pump to steering box made up :(

Image

Left to do,
Fuel lines and pump
Air box
Relocate Battery
Clutch line from master cyl to slave
Top radiator hose
Electrical

My brother is a auto sparky and he's coming down from Napier next weekend so we should have it running next sat

If it had a 3Y then it need new ones made, puts the motor too high if you just move the factory ones, if it had a 2L diesel they will be ok.....I think

you'd need to lift 50mm anyway if it's a diesel, then the bonet will shut without making a hole in the bonet, the diesel mounts do not have to be changed.

you don't have to if it is a diesel, my bonnet closed easy no body lift at all, i only did the body lift later, got to admit it was not that much clearence but it did close

On my LN65 i had to lift it, the bonet wouldnt close at all, did you lift the gearbox at all.?. that would prob give it enough clearance for the bonet to close.

Thanks Matt, I have used a recored 2L diesel rad and an electric 16" Wiseco fan off Tardme.

Some more pics of the finished article, off to the exhaust guy tomorrow, just a bit of tidying up in the wiring area and in the dash to be done.

Ready for the exhaust man

Surf would have been all done ecept i/we had to repair some dodgy wiring like the start wire from ign switch in a space of 100mm had 4 diff wires with strip connector and 2 twist and tape, fix head light wiring, and wire up 4wd to dash that surf didnt have. and some other stuff
Had missing plug from ecu that made it more interesting and with 4 diff wiring diagrams not one was right, now i have decided to rewire the left gaurd to ecu, fuel pump, fan, headlights :D

just for bit more work  all going well she will be all finished from my side sat avo

Ok, Ive worked out how much this exercise has cost me and a list of parts I used so others who want to do this will know what they are in for. Bear in mind I didn't try to do this on a tight budget, so you could save a bit on some cheaper/second hand parts.

Engine (1990 7mge) $600
New pwr steer hose $150
Pwr Steer belt $18
Alternator belt $20
Radiator Recore $220
Electric Fan $80
Davies Craig Fan controller $90
Top Rad Hose (Maxima) $32
Battery (NS70L) $90
Simota Pod Filter $97
Spark Plugs $36
Oil & Pwr Steer Fluid $60
Fuel Hoses and Fittings $120
Clutch line $12
Certification $400
Exhaust $380
Supra Clutch $80
Parts Total--- $2511

This does not include doing the head gasket "just incase",or my autosparkies time, or my own labor

Here's a list of secondhand bits I used

2L diesel Fuel hard lines
2L diesel engine mounts
5M upper engine mounts
5M Supra Flywheel,Bell housing
2L diesel clutch slave cyl
2L diesel radiator
Bosch Fuel Pump (044)

But the end result is a Surf that goes great and is far more enjoyable to drive. I highly recommend this swap if your 3y or 2L has shit itself.
The whole conversion was surprisingly easy, and once done looks like it was in there from factory.

Hi Mike,
Mike Holland (Suprasurf) hooked me up with it, one of his mates in ChCH was going to do the same swap but did a 1UZFE instead I think. I reakon a Turbo 7m would be easier to find (out of a Turbo Supra, and probably easier to get a manual setup for it too). Or mebbe buy a whole Cressida with a 7mge is an option too, you get ALL the wiring, fuel pump, sensors, plugs, ecu blah blah.
Your Surf is IFS?, you need a 50mm lift I think, not sure on that tho.
Its a greeat conversion tho, and flew through cert, no worries. Mechanically the swap is easy, paerticularly if you have the "rare as hens teeth" 5M belhousing, electrically its a bit of a mission if like me you know nothing about wires, but my brother said if he did another one it would be untold quicker. At the end of the day there is only about six wires you have to hook up and it goes.
Drop me a line if ya want to know anymore

PS..thats a great avatar
