4jb1-t Oil/Coolant Heat exchanger - 36mm socket?

Post by buried »

Hey,

When redoing the hoses from the heat exchanger I removed the oil filter and the heat exchanger itself was loose, there is a recessed 36mm nut that locks it down. I've tried three 36mm sockets, all impact but the walls are too thick to get into the recess. Anyone know where i can buy 36mm 12 slot (jaggered edge) socket? Repco, supercheap, bnt dont seem to have them :/ Alternativly, does anyone in Auckland have one I can borrow/return for a small fee?

Thanks
Josh

How deep is the recess? Most sockets are pretty similar in thickness. You may need to get one machined down a bit or get out the grinder

Recess is around 6mm deep, when done up the nut sits flush with the plate the oil filter screws down onto.

Contemplated getting one machined down but the only 36 i own is an impact socket and i'm not keen to weaken it considering i blew the side out of the previous one...

Bit hard to get photo's to show the angle of the recess but these should give an idea.

you might have to get a bit of tube slightly smaller than the hole and bigger than the distance across the flats. cut out bits for the corners, so it slide over the nut and contacts the sides.
ie tube has a couple of tabs. sticking down that contact the sides.
should work if its not on super tight.

if you have a welder put some flat on each side and weld them to a tube.

If I had a welder, life would be so much easier haha

Found one that's 47mm OD, seems I had to pull it out again i'll take it in and see if it will slide in. Failing that I think its goin to be off to an engineer to machine down the end of the impact socket

go buy the thin wall cheapy and grind it down with an angle grinder

may even make some form of bolt type clamp and put it in the drill press, turning at slowest speed and use the angle grinder to trim the surface to suit.
i have done this on other tools and it can work quite well.

it will save destroying your decent 36mm socket.

then write on it S/T #36b for future referance

where abouts in AK are you??

I'm on the shore, will be trying the 47mm one tomorrow morning if its close i'll buy it and take to it with the grinder its only $30.

I contemplated making something but not having a welder and limited metal working tools makes it a bit difficult.

Alright, just incase anyone else comes across this issue - apparently supercheap can order in a 36mm 12point socket with an OD of 41mm.

I ended up buying and bending a big screwdriver and removing some crap from the inner guard and bashing it around till it went down tight enough
