A question for Jimny owners

Post by Pooke »

Hi All,

Do any of you have an older Suzuki Jimny which still has the lever for the transfercase? This prior to 2006 I think? when they went to push button 4wd.

What I am trying to find out is, is there a Neutral Position on the transfercase?

Failing that, I should be able to fit a Samurai tcase in but would have to change ratios somehow.

I have a 98 Jimny and it does not have a neutral position on the transfer case.
You can fit the samurai transfer cases to them pretty easily with a few modifications.

Jimny's with a transfer leaver do not have neutral, years ago we fitted a Sj413 transfer box into a Jimny so it could be towed behind a motorhome without the risk of rooting the gearbox from lack of oil flow (which does happen in them)

Any information you can give me on fitting the 413 transfer case in would be much appreciated! Did you have to make up any mounts?

it was a major job, had to alter all driveshafts, make custom mounts, gear ratio was changed so 100kph became approx 4000rpm from memory, wasn't something I'd reccomend to be honest, but if you only did 50-70kph travelling it would be ok I suppose.

Ah that sounds like to much of a mission. But I dont have to worry about it now, I just bought a 2009 SWB Grand Vitara which has the Neutral in the transfercase

i'm assuming you're wanting to tow it behind something?
if its a 2009 you need a car dolly cause you cant fit an A frame to anything after 2003......

You also need to be aware that when in neutral setting on the transfer case ,most Suzukis are also in 4wd.

Towing in 4wd like this will bind up the drive train causing damage regardless of the fact that it is in neutral on the transfer.

This defiantly applies to the SJ413/Samurai/ Early Jimny and Vitaras . Would need to check up on the later model ones

The correct method of towing is to put transfer in 2wd and Gearbox in Neutral .

It has full instructions in the manual about flat towing and how to do it and its designed to do so. I leave the automatic in Park, with the engine running hold the transfer switch at the line just past N untill the screen on the dash says 'Neutral, Vehicle can now free roll', let hand brake off and leave key in Acc postition.

Hitch and Go in Australia are almost finished with getting their a-frame ceritfied suitable for use in NZ, They are already air-bag and frontal impact compliant and meet the requiements on Aus.
The LVVTA info sheet on the topic only states that you have to prove to the Avi that the mounting points do not adversly affect the performance of the airbags through documented evidence.
Hitch and go are in discussions with NZTA and LVVTA about approving their frames for use in NZ and all is sounds promising, they even have a few distibutors/installers around NZ ready to go.

So now I wait.
