New safari owner with a few questions

Hi,

Just purchased a safari, seems to go alright but have a few questions.

-What is the std idle speed, idling around 450rpm at the moment, which drives fine but seems quite low

-What is the std oil pressure, i have researched it and found more info on broken sensors than anything, mine generally sits around 3-4?

-It has one smashed in sill, what is the best way of fixing this (refer to pic). Cutting top off and smashing it back out and rewelding top back on, drilling holes and pulling back out or just replacing it?

-Occasionally it seems quite rough when switching it off, sometimes it will run on for a couple seconds (maybe 1/15 times).

-Like most of them it has rooted window frames, on trademe there is a place selling whole windows and rubbers for around $130 in chch, any recommendations in hamilton?

My safari shuts off rougher when cold.
If you want to do the sills I had a section taken out that wasnt bent and had a friendly sheetmetal outfit fold up heavier new ones for me.

idling i don't know as my tach only works over 2000rpm. If its ticking over fine id leave it be

cheers doug, not too fussed on sill strength as will rig up some sliders once its fixed.

Hey Dan, Nice looking truck.

Standard idle speed is 700 +/- 50 rpm. So yes your trucks running a bit low. I've got all the Nissan workshop manuals if you want them (PM me) with the procedure on how to check and adjust it.

The oil px sensors are known to be really average (hence all the info you've found). Mine sits just over 4 kg/cm^2 on the gauge when its reading correctly but my gauge actually fluctuates between 2 and 6. The manual states it should be >0.8 @ idle and 3.0 to 4.0 @ 300 rpm.

Sill, no ideas sorry.

Mine used to do the exact same thing, I wasn't super worried as it improved after an engine flush and new oil. I just gave it another oil and filter change and it's even better now. I think Swamped is right about the cold thing. Diesels don't like short cycles or being put straight under load. So give I'd suggest a bit of an engine birthday and letting it warm up and cool down might help it. If nothing else its better for the engine.

Like you my rear windows are f@$ked too. I was looking to the mob in CHC as well. There freight is reasonable considering you are shipping glass. Any window repairer in HTN would be able to install them for you. Alternatively it is possible to do it yourself, the methods on exact same as any single glass pane (like a windscreen). Some glass shops are able to cut you tempered vehicle glass too, S&S and Novus don't but I believe Metro Glasstech can. The windows are the exact same size as the SWB MQ/MK Patrol rear windows, which had solid panes not sliders. So thats how the rubbers can be sourced aftermarket.

Thanks for that, the old owner said it needed an oil change, it had to wait a few days as im on a uni budget but i will do it today. Do you think its worth putting an oil flush through it? I have always been quite wary of any oil additives...

I thought you may have been right about the cold shutoff but it did it to me again this morning after a 10+ km drive... hopefully the oil change calms it down a bit but its not really a major at the end of the day. I think its made a lot worse by the low idle - ill bump that up to 700.

Might have a shop around with the windows - ill post up if I find somewhere closer willing to do the job for the same sort of money.

Those workshop manuals would be handy... I found some on the internet but had to post 25 posts to access them on a forum... that would take me a couple years... pmed

I've run a diesel flush before but unless the oils really burnt when you drop it I wouldn't worry too much. IF the shutdown is always or regularly rough it could be the fuel cutoff solenoid not doing its job perfectly but yeah I only notice it during cold shutdown.

Think long and hard before putting an engine flush through. I did it in my Safari once and disturbed allsorts of ancient crap and then had to do to 6 full oil changes (oil and filters 11lts each time) every 200 - 300 km until the oil would last. It was just going to a real sludge every trip to town and back, ended up costing a fortune in oil and filters.
And yes I did follow the instructions

thanks for the heads up - will just change oil and filters and leave it at that for now

i rebuilt my window frames, infact i have done a couple of trucks now but that depends if you have access to a welder, pretty easy really, the rubber refits ok but can be a bit mis shaped looking where the rust was, in this case i just used black sealer and clamped it flat to the frame until dry.

with the sill i would cut one off another truck and weld back on, again not much help without a welder...or as i have done in the past strategically tack weld plates to the sill and then use a slide hammer tacked to the plate and pull it out the best you can.

personaly i dont like engine flushes, it can create more trouble than its worth.. just do an oil change.. flushes are designed to get rid of sludge but it sometimes takes several oil changes ( as someone has already said)..

I put one piece windows into the back of my SW Safari, my local glass guy in Howick got some glass(must be same standard as that removed to meet wof regs) cut to the right size for me, I did however give him a template to cut them too. Made the template out of old core flute plastic signage material. I used old school windscreen rubbers for it to go into, the type that have a filler moulding in them, if you like I could send you a photo of how mine look. Then tinted the inside with film.

I would not use and additive to flush the engine as once you loosen the gunge it can go through your engine and cause problems with oil relief valves, oil control rings and also block the oil pump pick in the sump.
However if your taking off the rocker cover or sump then I would manually clean what you can see being careful not to leave loose gunge behind. :D :D :D

I would also use a good oil, I tried Valvoline and it took longer for oil light to go out and the engine seemed more noisy. I use Caltex Delo 400 I think it is and the engine seems to run quieter etc.
