Howzit from Hawaii!

Post by 1uzrnr »

Howzit! My fiance and I are coming to NZ for 3 weeks and I wanted to see what wheeling in New Zealand was like. I see there is an event on the North Island at Gwavas on Aug 11th and would like to make it there. We will be renting a campervan so I hope that we can get to the area without problems.

A little about me, I am a Mechanical Engineering student and a U.S. Navy Veteran and my fiance is an Accountant. I have a 86 Toyota 4runner that has a few modifications. It has an engine swap from the original 22rte to a 1uzfe mated to a tacoma v6 R150 transmission and dual gear transfer cases, Chevy one ton axles (Dana 60, 14 bolt) with lockers front and rear, 42" Pitbull Rockers, 4-link rear suspension, rear Toyota leafs in the front, DIY beadlock wheels, exo cage, and a Warn 9.5 winch.

We would also like to have any advice on where to go and where not to go.

Hope to meet some of you at the event.

Thanks!

When and where are you flying into/staying etc?

Im sure theres a few people that can take you out wheelin.

Howdy
You will love the 4wding opportunities here and really wish you had your own truck on the trip :)

Here is a link to my Photobucket page with a few South Island 4wd trip albums
http://s999.photobucket.com/user/jasonm ... t=6&page=1
In the South Island two key 4wd bases are the West Coast , see Reefton, Lake Daniel, West Coast,Denniston albums. Also Queenstown as a base, see Macetown,Ohau, Grampian and Tekapo albums

Even in a camper you will be able to see a fair bit of the country but don't get too adventurous by yourselves :)
Hopefully your time here will co-incide with some club or other trips. Keep us updated

Thanks! We are flying into Auckland on the 3rd, will be pick up our campervan the next day, and fly to Christchurch on the 16th. We don't really have any plans, but want to hike, ski, paraglide, and zipline.

On the South Island we plan to rent a car and stay at hostels and bed and breakfasts, that is probably were we will ski and maybe zipline. We leave Christchurch on the 24th.

We would be ecstatic if we could ride along on a wheeling adventure.

Haha! What island are you going to? If your coming to Oahu I could show you what it's like to wheel on one tons and 42's. My fiance was born and raised on Kauai and we know quite a bit about what to do on all the islands.

Keep everyone up to date with your travel plans and I'm sure people will offer you a ride on a trip, or offer to make a trip happen if you were in the area. On that note if you are passing through Nelson, let me know :D

Rockwells would be nice, maybe I'll consider them if I start breaking my 1 tons.

I haven't seen any SAS'd pathfinders, but have seen a few hardbodies with a SFA. All of them for show.

I am from the mainland, but my fiance was born and raised on Kauai and is part Hawaiian.

Ill be heading to Queenstown over 16-18 August along with another Jeeper. Was thinking about a run into Macetown or through the Nevis Valley.

Nick any recommendations for this time of year?

Let me know if this works out for your timing, maybe we could all hook up with the Shotover 4wd Club

Hi there

The Nevis road is closed this time of year. We tried to get into Macetown a few weeks ago but the was a big slip that had blocked the track, I doubt that the slip has been cleared at this time of year. We are a little bit limited at this time of year due to tacks being closed over the winter months. I will ask around the club see if anyone wants to do a trip somewhere on the weekend of the 18th

Cheers Nick

Thanks for your help this weekend guys, i'm glad you enjoyed it.

We all loved the brownies, thanks Amy

I know Jesse & Amy would like to experience more wheeling and scenery, they have limited access and are heading to the South Island in about 4-5 days, if anyone can take them out for a trip, please PM me and I can put you in touch with them :D

Update from Queenstown District Council they expect to have the slip cleared from the Macetown track by the weekend. No ice or snow there at the moment. We will look at taking a run in there on Saturday. Jesse, Amy if you guys make it to Queenstown by Saturday we have a couple of spare seats :). My cell is 027 244 8020 or anyone else who is in the area and wants to tag along.
