new here with a broken Range

Post by norbu09 »

hi,

wanted to say hello here for a long time. Bought a nice old Range some time ago and somehow miss the time to do it up. It is a pretty nice ride as it is though and love taking it to the beach.

Today i got a tow from a friendly AA guy as I broke down and turns out one of the rear axles broke. I also just moved to Wellington and have no space to fix the truck at home. Any suggestions on good mechanics in Wellington that could fix the broken axle?

cheers
Lenz

Hi Lenz,
Is it an axle or diff? Front or rear? Usually its the diff that goes first, but if it was an axle you could have just engaged the centre diff lock and continued to drive home.
If a diff then you need to remove the drive shaft and axles from the offending end of the vehicle, then drive home.

Grant Guy Motors in old Hutt road Thorndon good garage to get repairs done. If you want to travel a bit then Carl at 4WD Specialists in the Hutt Valley. Done a lot of work on a customers LR and also used to have one himself.

I actually thought it was something way more serious but the AA guy had a quick look at it and said it is the rear axle. I engaged the diff lock and drove off the truck, also, have a working hand break now which worried me slightly initially :)

I have all my tools in storage in the moment as the new house has no garage to bolt around in but may have a look at it tomorrow in daylight and see if I can get it working again. Are there any Range repair manuals online for the 86 EFI Manual?

Cheers

Hi Lenz, lovely vehicle, esp with the manual gearbox! If you can locate a replacement axle/gaskets, I can do this job for you. I am ASE Certified. I have done this exact job before on a RRC. Theres probably a bit of sheared stub axle stuck in the diff side gear, so its a case of pulling both axles out, pulling the diff nugget out, cleaning it up, reinstall. PM me if you are interested, cheers.
