This may not be in the right area, but I couldnt think of a better place to put it.
A couple of mates and myself plan to head in here in the next few weeks.
Can anyone please tell me the condition of the track? (I use the term track loosely)
Its been many years since Ive been in there, and I cant remember what it was like.
Other than the first main river crossing, what are the rest like?
2 vehicle trip ok? Or is it fairly safe to take just one?
Cheers
Ken

Re: Macauly Hut truck
I was up there just after the big snow fall they had in late June. Crossing the river at the end of Lilybank Rd is pretty easy, but you'll still need a snorkel. We didnt go up to the hut, but meet some blokes who had been up there and they said the track was okish, has been some washouts etc......
But like wjw said, take 2 trucks!!!

Thanks for that, yes we are planning to take 2 trucks. One of the guys going had some issues coming back from the growler a few weeks back, he was certainly wishing there were two trucks that trip. We had previously done it a few weeks before that in a single vehicle, but the rivers had come up this time.

Any of those flat river valley trips are weather dependent on the days you are going in and not on what somebody else did last week.
A warm rain with snow melt and they are impossible or cold frosty conditions and they are easy.
Most of the track is on easy river flats
Cheers Richard

Was in there this weekend, easy if you stay on main track. No snow in river bed at all. Managed to cross Godley opposite Red stag hut, river very low though.
One truck is sweet as long as you stay on main track, I drove the whole way in 2wd including cross the Macauly. Dont take this crossing for granted it has swallowed many trucks.

I did this trip when I lived in lake tekapo (about 7-8 years ago)
Track has gone down hill since then and try to do it in the day time.
I got lost when it got dark
Nice trip but can be a very unforgiving river crossing
