hydraulic winch 80 series

Post by hello24 »

i am looking at installing a hydraulic winch to my 80 series have done alot of reading about how slow they are run off the power steering pump. so have been thinking about fitting a better flowing pump. the question i have is could i replace the power steering pump with a high flow pump and run both the power steering and winch of that pump instead of running two separate pumps? or will that high flow pump be too much for the steering box and seals to handle?

have been looking at these log splitter pumps on trademe they are dirt cheap and about the right flow http://www.trademe.co.nz/business-farming-industry/farming-forestry/other/auction-619781539.htm

what are other people using to run there hydraulic setups?
thanks

Std l/c pumps are driven by gears and are part the the motor.
I would look at fitting a seperate pump that way if anything happens you dont comp your steering system

Driven pump off the PTO....
There are uprated power steering type pumps which are dedicated to winches used in the UK by the Land Rover boys...

thanks guys yea my power steering pump is gear driven and thats part of the reason i would like to have that same pump working the winch also so i dont have the problem of belts......

Std 80s dont have the mounting for a pto.
It was a major oversite when toyota developed the vehicle

I have heard you can swap out the 80 TC for a 60 TC....

If anyone has a spare 60 series TC in CHC I know someone who'll try it ;-)

the real early 80s with part time ran a older style trans box but from about 92 onwards the complete transmission output is different.

that's why the Aussies developed the part-time set up that is available currently.

you could replace the complete auto with a auto out of a 60 or 70 model, it will bolt up just have to look at a new (possible) trans cross member. its a lot of work but the benefits of PTO power output would be awesome

just got off the phone to a power steering specialist and was informed that the extra flow of a bigger pump wont damage the steering box as long as the pressure is kept as close to stock as possible so for the price of one of those log splitter type pumps i may as well try it out. the plan is to make a addapter and mount it in place of the existing pump with the gear drive and a bigger fluid tank and turn the relief valve in the pump down to just over 1200psi

It might pay to have a word with a Hydraulic guru as when i did my set up i looked at the 2 stage pumps used in alot of log splitter set ups and was advised not to go down that path ,the required revs to get a reasonable amount of flow made it not practical ,mind you i was wanting around 70-80 lpm at 2000rpm ,ended up importing a pump from the UK at 1/3 of what it was going to cost here

Hi,
You may already know this but will make a couple of comments.
The Log Splitter pump flow rates are usually in US GPM and is for the low pressure flow.
Usually require 3600 rpm to give the rated flow, the rated flow is typically only at a pressure upto about 600 - 700 psi then it switches over to the low flow high pressure, this flow is typically about 1/4 of the rated flow.
Also need to remember that most are CW rotation, not sure which way you will want.

If you need new pump I have some 16, 22, and 28 GPM pumps. PM me if interested.
Cheers

yea i realised that. at 16 gpm (60lpm) that is far more then i was aiming for so even at 1/4 that 15lpm is far more then the standard ps pump. i was hoping the 2 stage would be an advantage by having a fast line pull until the winch comes under say 700psi of load then drops a gear so you have an idea how much load is on the winch? opinions?

What kind of hydraulic winch are you looking at using? You need to be careful in the selection of the winch cause if you go for too higher gearing, you might find that 1200 psi doesnt pull that well?

looking at a runva winch at this stage but once i get the pump tackled may look further. 1200psi would just be a starting point (safe) untill i can find out exactly what the steering box is capable of...
