New GQ project/rebuild..

Post by muskie »

nothing flash and to a tight budget, thought i would share the build/rebuild. bought a 92 GQ with a cooked motor off someone coxsy put me in touch with, generally very tidy with very minimal rust... everything is done by me as funds dont allow me to get stuff built by someone, so heres a few pics so far...started to strip to give a quick paint up, windows were a bit rough so i stripped and rebuilt them.

cut the guards and moved up 35mm then a cheap ass $150 spray job done by me in the shed

extended rear lower trailing arms, used heavier tube and reinforced with angle, pushed origional bushes back in as they are still in good shape. rebuilt both rear calipers and extended bump stops, i was going to buy longer bumpstops but at $200 i decided to mod mine.
3'' EFS springs and new longer rear brake line.

Image

made up some sill protectors/rock sliders. made them pretty strong as i may put a full exo cage on later.

luckily i have a good boss who lets me raid the scrap bin, so all the steel came from the scrap bin at work for the bumper/sliders/wheel carrier.

the new engine waiting to go in along with a manual gbox.

Flash...you're obviously a capable bloke with the tools  .
Because you've trimmed the rear guards i'm assuming those plastic stone protectors won't fit back on? Can't quite see from the pics.

yes they are on but not that clear from the pics, i had to trim them back quite a bit, then stone guarded them before i painted the truck.

looking good. Rear bar looks good and will give you wicked departure angle. Are you going to put standard tank back in as may stick down a bit and without the step/tow bar could be venerable to knocks.

Want to do the same on my Safari but need to work a way to raze tank or find another one to go in that is not to expensive.

had a busy time friday afternoon and saturday, out with the old and in with the new, and bloody hard work taking an auto trans and engine out putting a new gear manual gearbox in on your own.... cant afford a new heavy duty clutch at the mo ($690) so engine will have to wait a few weeks.

refit drive shafts, and a load of other bits and pieces aswell..

have also started cutting up steel for a set of drop boxes.

How much longer did you make your lower arms? Any reasoning behind your chosen length? Did you chop the old chassis mounts off and reuse them?
It's a mod I have been trying to find motivation for.

hey mate, i extended the arms by 18mm which seems to be a recognised figure for the 3'' lift and thats what i did my old truck to and everything seemed to work perfectly so just did them the same..i didnt move the mounts (if you mean trailing arm chassis mounts)??

coxsy, the truck has been sitting in my shed getting on for a year before i touched it, i had to finish off a restoration project i started....glad the guys remember the truck, mind you i think it sat there for some time ay :D ive now given myself 3 months, want it up and running a.s.a.p, really miss my offroading...

My mistake. I didn't realise you were just correcting geometry for the lift. I thought you had done the 200-300mm lower trailing arm extension that a lot of guys in Oz seem to do.
Cheers.

having to do a bit of work on the house so the truck is getting less attention however managed to get started on a draw/storage system. on reflection maybe a little over the top but just used stuff i had in the workshop without buying anything.

Image

Image

Image

not finished yet, going to mount compressor and tank in the open side, filled with dynamat which i had laying around to take some of the noise from compressor.

need to source some handles/latches for draws and make second draw.
Image

Image

going to mount some lights in the rear, thats what the switch is for, also fitted an aux 12v supp.

covered top, sides and switch panel in marine carpet which i had kicking around.

the odd angle of the cargo barrier is to all me to make a mount for my plastic trax, they should fit, in perfectly on top, will make a tray as they are usually full of crap after use..

Looking good. How well does the deadener work? Was thinking of using that brand on the Safari interior to lessen the road noise, but at that price, I want to make sure it works!

Cheers
