Ripped off - Every Single Bloody Time!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Every Time I goto XXXX I wonder if I'm going to get RIPped off and guess what I bloody well do and I'm sick of it, hence my post.
Bought a battery lead $28 bucks my dad comes home with 2 of the same but bigger at a combined cost of $24 bucks from supercheap
I buy 6 hoseclips 4 at $3:30 and two at $3:60 (bigger ones) I return and exchange the 4 for the bigger ones. I get charged $1 more in price per one, so now one hose clip is $4:60!! for a friggen hoseclip. I buy nice and thick beefy fuel line from supercheap for $9:85 or so a metre and I buy some very small rubber tubing, smaller than a pen from ripco $11 per metre!!! WTF They are taking us for a ride and I'm really sick of it.
Who are XXXX? they are a little company in a remote village in china.

you can apply for a card that gives you discount and get your Dad to use it as well , the moer you use the better the savings get .
i use to have one in qt but now dont even bother with them and just use supercheap or a mate with good discount at ripco.
bloody frustrating though, have the same with electrical wholesalers who give
greater discount on trade , but their trade price is way dearer than others to begin with...arrrgh
bring back public floggings ...........

Totally agree Mike, I steer clear of supercheap too as they all seam to be mindless idiots who know nothing in there. I haven't bought anything from repco since Tony left town. I go through Stanmore Auto now as I find they do good cash prices know their stuff and can get anything within 24hrs.

Yeah, we are not going to be as cheap as suprcheap all the time but after their track record with product recalls I wouldn't go there. The Consumer mag people made some strong claims on their thoughts, look here
http://www.consumer.org.nz/newsitem.asp ... %20recalls
The article starts, Super Cheap Auto offers New Zealand consumers a wide range of car parts and accessories. But it has also imported and sold sub-standard safety equipment. We think its attitudes to customer safety and quality control need a major over-haul.
The other oportunity for you all to take advantage of is we have a price promise that we will beat the competition by 10%, Take it up!
Yeah I know I'm Biased.
But my staff know what they are on about, so much so we don't let you pick your own sparkplugs and oil filters, we make you ask us for the right one. I get squemish every time I see any retailer with Head gaskets sitting on the shelf for anyone to pick up, bend or whatever?
The question you have to ask yourself is do you want stuff cheap or do you want good stuff? We Buy Quality, Sell Quality and Back up Quality!
And when you are in the middle of no-where and your truck is on the edge you know you want it to do all the right things.
Wish I could make it down to the BBQ at Riks but as it's Xmas time I'm working this weekend, it would be a great chance to get that ear bashing from above
Have a good Xmas guys

P.S. Al, I may have left Chch but am only an email away (brmgr34@repco.co.nz)

As always, you want something, ask the question.
But also as always it's case by case.
It's probably not going to be worth the time for either of us if you want a pack of cable ties but you want bigger stuff give me a holler.
Just don't ask me here cause I only get to see this site from home.
Damm internet access is very limited, they don't want us looking at Mike's avatar from work!
Well Lunch is over so time to go back to work

I had a repco card through work but they seemed to have cancelled it. I now use Gales Supercheap cnr Colombo & Milton (opp the Mobil). Theyre not part of the Super cheap Auto chain. Similar feel to the old Butler Stanmore, and they seem to know their stuff. Brakes shoes for my old FJ40 proved very difficult to match, none of the other shops' books showed the correct ones, but they sorted it out with their wee notebook of experience.
Hit them for some cash discount and they consider it. I got a set of rear hub bearings for the 40 from them cheaper than their supplier said they sold to them.

Just been into TWL truck bits and pieces. Bought 5 trailer plugs, 6m of 5 core cable and 2 clip pin things (go through the bolt on the coupling) for $30 bucks. bet the cable alone at that place that rips you off would have been $30 bucks judging by the small rubber tube I bought for $11 bucks a meter. Although those hoseclips and rubber tube wont get recalled I hope
I bet they come from the same supplier

I don't want to appear biased but I think you would agree Pajfan that Repco counter staff at the retail counters in CHCH do as a majority leave a bit to be desired in the experience stakes.
I remember the good old days when trade and retail was all the same, like the more regional branches are still.
I have migrated to Appco, as I know they are part of the group and 90% of the counter staff have a long term experience advantage.
I know I am biased as Holmesy is a buddy, it's not quite the same with him in the North Island but still, good counter staff make all the difference.
Mike, you have to understand that the Repco branches here are basically a supermarket for car parts for those off the street, it's like the difference between supervalue and the Foodstuffs warehouse.
If you spend enough to shop at the warehouse you get better deals, otherwise they are the supermarket chain looking for every single cent they can get.
Sorry about the rant but it's worth thinking about before writing them off.
Also sorry Pajfan but now I'm off to praise BNT in another topic.

Like anywhere you have to be careful what you buy...the best way to go is to ring a few places & compare prices & availability.
But generally i have found Repco to be well..a rip off
I once went to get an inline pressure switch to plumb into the brake line to turn brake lights on when braking..Repco $67...Butlers $12 !!!..same Brand & part number too.
The best thing about the small places is they are kiwi owned & have people who actually know what they are talking about most of hte staff at Repco are just kids who know very little but are cheap to hire...but like check out staff at supermarket.

Tony, When I was the Parts manager at Mayfield Motors in Blenheim we avoided Repco like a transexual whore. The staff knew SFA and even giving them a part # was hopeless. I can honestly say I've never been to a Repco branch in Blenheim, Christchurch or Nelson where the 15 year old behind the counter has a clue. And the only reason I go to Repco in the last 7 years myself is on a Sunday if something has broken and I HAVE to get it fixed now. And even then I ask for the catalogue and look it up myself.
As for Prices, I know that Repco's "Retails" are an over inflated price. Eg, A Nissan Safari Clutch Kit from Autoclutch (Repco's supplier) has a RRP of $846+GST, and costs them about $550+. Walk into any Repco and ask for the retail and you'll be told more than $1k. And a Genuine Nissan one Retails for about $780 from memory.
I could go on and on about this, I even compiled a list of part numbers a few years back and the price difference, as we used to buy direct from the same suppliers. And if we needed something immediately that we'd run out of, a couple of times Repco's "Trade" price was higher than the distributors RRP! And when the staff were approached and asked about this we were told that they couldn't discount it anymore, as it when below their minimum margin. Funny thing was, it was about 40% GP

So don't give us the "our staff know what their on about - we have competitive prices" crap. We all know it's BS
*end of rant*
BTW, this is not a personal attack on you, Tony. It is my (and others by the sounds of it) experience and knowledge that has led me to this end.

Repco do seem to have a fairly big margin built into their prices. If you know it's cheaper somewhere else buy it there or tell them and they'll adjust their price. I go there still for the odd thing and it depends on the store and individual manager. I use the same staff member every time (not the school leaver of course) that knows the business better and I've been able to beat them up on the price and have got some real heavy discounts - fairly of course
As for quality of parts between different shops a Champion spark plug or bosch coil is the same in any shop, so if you are buying that sort of branded product it doesn't matter where it comes from.

i reckn buying stuff off the internet like trademe , ebay and like is the way to go , as people want to keep up their feedback . Plus alot of companys are now selling gear regularly on there as its really good to sell bulk lot's & Great advertise & let people know who you are & what you sell ( ebay's wicked for that ). A soon as you see someone with some bad feedback , you know to be "warned' !
Ripco has always been like that , they are more orientated around the
"trade" , if you work for or have an Engineering/Auto company , you get alot off the price & better service . Everyone else gets the bits and pieces left over with service , parts , etc

Re: Ripped off - Every Single Bloody Time!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Interesting read.. I cant honestly say i've ever had a good experience at r**co either, particularly the lack of knowledge of the staff, the youngun's that believe they know everything about cars, if the part number isnt in the computer they wouldnt have a clue. ie you order something, take one look at it no thats wrong, "oh but thats the part listed in the computer", well im telling you thats definately not the one. And try ordering things for a car thats a mix n match from several model variations, not fun lol. "Yes, i know that part numbers are likely different, the parts are likely slightly different, but they are interchangable as for the purpose for which i need them so just order what i damn well asked for!"
Thats my little rant lol

Re: Ripped off - Every Single Bloody Time!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I've regularly bought small items at Repco. But I was in for an interesting surprise when I moved to Greymouth about 18 months ago.
First I needed a headlight for my rangie. The clown at the counter spent 2 minutes telling me "no, we'd never have one of those in stock" before walking out the back and virtually tripping over a brand new one in the box.
Second visit, needed some 20 gauge wire. The stuff that sells for about $2 per meter. I was charged $18 for 3m.
When I voiced my dissapproval over the price, I was told everything was going up due to oil.
Third and final visit. Needed some 5 core trailer wire.
Same guy behind the counter finds the roll of trailer wire, measures of 3m and pulls a blunt pocket knife out. He folds over the wire and tries to cut it with his knife using an upward slashing motion which misses his throat by centimetres each time.
I was expecting him to slip with the knife and die on the floor in front of me.
Then he finishes and tries to charge me $7 per metre.
I asked if it was 5 core trailer wire, but he got the wrong roll. It was 7 core. I asked if he could sell it to me for the 5 core price, the answer was no.
So repeat the same "dancing with death" wire cutting procedure with the 5 core wire, then I get charged $18 for 3m.
All enquiries for trade cards etc were brushed off. "No, we can't give you one of those".
I haven't been back, I've spoken with many others who haven't either. I still shop in REPCO branches in Chch, but TWL and Supercheap get most of my business.

theres some funny $hit on that site

Want improved braking? Why just cross drill those rotors? Introducing KaleCoAuto cross drilled brake lines! Improved airflow through lines provides superior brake cooling. Brake fluid is exposed to cool moving air, almost instantly reducing heat, and providing shorter stopping distances! All lines are made of quality latex. Brake lines come in: Red and Yellow. Please specify color when ordering!! Warning!! You must replace ALL brake lines at once. You may mix colors.

Modern synthetic oil is very expensive - so why run the risk of getting it dirty by running it through your motor block? KaleCoAuto bypass kit comes with everything you need to run the oil around your motor block where it will do more good. Oil runs cooler, and as a result, there may be horsepower gains!

Hmm. and I always thought it was just a northland thing. I was in Repco one day trying to explain to the boy racer kid, who had just finished telling the previous customer how much he knew, what an exhaust clamp was.
His first reply (i kid you not) was is that something you can use to make your exhaust quiet for WOF's. In the end I left the electrical bits i managed to find on the shelf on the counter and left. I walk out followed closely by the branch manager. He wanted to know what the issue was. After a breif discussion he offered to give me a discount card for my continued custom. I suggested he sack the kids and employ staff and I left. Haven't set foot in one since.
I use BNT and get trade discount for cash.
They offer great service. When looking for a air filter for my old suzuki motor that had an unknown filter on a SU carb one of the staff spent about 45mins with me going through the book till we found it. didn't have it in stock but it arrived on my door at 9.00am the next day. GO BNT
