Stadia and Neasville

Post by zuky »

Hey I went for a stroll last weekend up around this way and found the eastern side of the Neasville loop has been devistated from a huge slip. There is also some exciting wash outs exposing old boiler tanks from the past that have been acting very well as culvet drains over the last 50 - 100 years. Its a shame to see a great track like this get in such bad shape. Its not unfixable but it'll take some work.

Was anyone else aware of the slip? Or do you know how long its (the slip) been there? Its a case of use it or lose it though now... if the slip is never cleared it'll only be a short time untill this great track is over grown and forgoten :(

On a positive note the western side of the loop is still all good (it's just not strictly speaking a loop anymore)

The track down to the grapevine is also in need of some love too, but still drivable :) Just a few fallen trees etc...

I guess since the kiwi challenge isnt going through there anymore that they are getting neglected.

A few combined club runs through there and working bees should see it gradually getting better.

We didn't go past the drop at the rock by the river in the zuk this time as we get the bash by the club for exploring alone... just because there jelious of the zuk  But we did walk up quite away... We crossed the Tirua river twice and started to head up the hill. The track forks about 900 meters before it should intersect the top track. It then gets quite steep and fades out. We search for any sign of the old track but its obvious that it has been not used for a while.

As for track conditions in general:

There has been some serious flooding down there. The old camp site on the courner of the river is now just a sandy marsh and there are trees block the track/river access that have been washed down the stream. Apart from those bits which need some chain saw work the track is generally in good nic. The worst bit would be the first 100 meters once you first meet the river. I guess historically that has been enough to put people off.

I'd be keen as for a new year misson in there. It would be great to link this track back to the top of Stadia again, just like in the loggin gold mining days 8)

Let us know when you want to go... I'll be there.

Isn't a great part of Stadia/Neavesville privately owned?

I also seem to remember some info about some very grumpy cops etc complaining about the mud being dropped on the road.

Peter Vahrey may be able to confirm the new owners intentions etc

Yes you are correct there are parts of that area that are privately owned. But these days with GPS you can make sure you keep off those small areas  The best help is Map Toaster with property boundries... although you always seem to find people trying to steal crown land and claim it as there own.
