Finally got around to getting a picture of the tow hooks on the rear with the extra piece of angle on the top of the hook.

Image

Worked bloody well yesterday, no twisting or pulling out of shape etc when I was either snatching someone or someone was snatching me.

Im not finished yet with it tho....... Once I have a look at Taz's set up and get pictures, it will be mod'ed again...... 8) 8) 8) 8)

My new winch turned up today(Big thanks to Tom for sorting me out). Now the fun times begin..........

As I wanted to get the winch as far back as I could, so I could get a better approach angle than what I have ATM. Ive just sat it on a bit of plate to see what and where it will sit best.

Image

Image

Going by what Ive measured up and by the looks of it, Im not going to be able to gain anything really. Which is a bugga. So I put the bull bar back on and what do ya know.........

Well so much for building a new bull bar!!!

if you are willing to cut the front valance, then you can get it back even further if you desire ................

It did cross my mind to cut it. But as the plumbing for the headlight washers is behind it and my auto cooler is mounted close to it as well. I didnt really entertain the idea for to long.

Skid do you have any pictures of your 80 with out the winch/bull bar??

If the weather plays nicely tomorrow, i'll take the valance off and have another play around.

Looks like that bullbar could easily be modified to fit a bit closer to the front? Would increase approach angle.

Will the winch fit between the chassis rails? I know it will end up with the hawse off set slightly but it would be a small compromise to get it down and tucked back further. Had to do that with mine in the Playdoh...

Yes it can, but its only around 60mm I'd gain.

It will, but as Im kinda OCD about things being centered and I want to have the winch mounted as high as it can be due to me liking to splash about in water. Im wanting to protect it as much as I can.

Just taken off the valance, about to work out where and how much to cut out, idea now entertained.

Well its done, valance cut out. Ive cut it in a way so I can still have my plumbing sitting where I want it to and still have the winch as far back as it can be.

Before cutting.

After cutting.

Still some tiding up of the valance to do, but it lunch time........ 8) 8)

without the winch/bullbar it would look like any other factory 80 ;-)

Ive done the cutting of the valance and giving it a weee clean up and spray it black, just to give it some protection from the weather etc. Cut it the same on both side, as I'll be fitting another auto cooler and that OCD strikes again. Put the winch on and had a look/measure up.

Just enough room to get your hand in and stuff.

But, looks like Ive got other issues to fix before I can carry on with fitting the winch and making the bullbar........ Noticed some leakage on the rear diff housing/backing plate area. Seems I need to do a housing seal now to!!! Oh funtimes.......

I would be a bit careful about fitting it so close to that oil line to the cooler. It will only take a couple of off line pulls to get a bulge of wire out past the back of the winch and catch that hose. I know because I did it to mine :o I now have a metal plate behind my winch drum...

Dont worry Matty, When I get the second auto cooler fitted, I'll be moving the hose's, as Im not happy with where they put them.

Todays effort isnt much.

Got my plate(5mm) cut down, dug through my scrap bin of steel and found some solid bits of angle(6mm), which Ive used to support the plate.

Image

Image

I'll be using this bit of angle underneath(running left to right) the plate to give it some support.
Image

And the outside of the chassis rails....
Image

Im thinking about putting a bolt on both sides into the angle/plate, as it will be getting welded, but I just want that bit extra just incase. Im also adding another bolt on both outside bits. Yes there will be crush tubes etc......

I'd suggest putting a length of flat bar on its edge, along the back edge of your plate to stop it bending when winching under load. My winch is mounted very similar to yours and I managed to bend my plate enough to warp the winch and jam the gearbox up so it couldn't work.
