over heating

96 disco v8

went around redrocks on the weekend, coming through the sand i noticed it was getting hot. engine started steaming ect. I let it cool right down added more coolant and off we went, did this twice on the way in. was fine on the way out.
today when climbing a large hill, 2000rpm slow speed so no cool air going through the radiator again it got hot.

im gona flush the rad this weekend, but i didnt notice any sludge when the water was boiling out. so if its not a build up of sludge causing this, could this be a water pump issue?

Radiators have a habit of blocking up over the years.
Pull radiator out and get it professionally checked for flow.

Had similar to a RR a while back and it was all down to radiator. Recore or cheaper aftermarket replacement and all was good again.

steel core rubberwear rusty and blocking rad core?
these are what i'd work through whilst giving it all an overhaul,
a compression check is also very telling if a bit of air is leaking into to the water gallerys past the head gaskets,
addition of waterwetter and a quality glycol/inhibitor helps also.
I have done some cheap fixes with a dishwasher cube cooling system flush
and replacing hoses to get me home from up north (whangarei to Hamilton)

i'll put a fiver on the radiator.
recoring is expensive, and there is a cheap way and non-cheap way so if getting quotes make sure you are comparing apples with apples

So it's fine untill you put the engine under load at low speed ie low air flow .?

go for a slow drive up a hill when it gets hot , pop the bonnet and see if you can spin the viscous fan by hand . of you can its rooted .

When the motor get hot, put your hand on the radiator core to see if it is hot as well. if it is cold it is likely that the thermostat is jammed closed. If the radiator is hot in patches and cold in patches the radiator is partly blocked.

this is all good advice. ill keep it in mind. ill have to find a steep hill to get her hot so i can try this

the radiator can be one third blocked (all down the bottom by the way) and you can't tell from looking.
That fan and the radiator core are ranked first and 2nd by me, then the thermostat.

be wary that, a blocked/partially blocked radiator will also stop the fan getting enough heat passing over it to lock up.

theory of it is so simple but I've blind eyed that little gem heaps of times
