2L-T Engine Problems

Post by karljsw »

Hi Guys and Girls I'm new to the forum and was wondering if you could give me some advice or share your knowledge.

I have a 1989 Toyota Hilux Surf SSR Limited. 2l-t Chassis number starts with Ln-130.

Basically I cant get it to start. About 2 months ago the diesel pump started leaking so me and dad had a go at re-furbing it; we didnt do a very good job and it wouldn't start. Went to a parts dealer and got a second hand one, put it on and hooked it up. Went sweet for 3-4 days then nothing. Diesel is getting to the injectors but nothing happens. The little primer on the diesel filter no longer goes solid after you pump it. We have tried gravity feeding the diesel pump, clearing the valve on top of the fuel tank.

I cannot seem to get the check engine light up on the dash. when I attach my multimeter to the diagnosis box it reads at 11v pretty steadily when contected to the vf and e1 terminals.

Hopefully you can offer some suggestions.
Thanks
Karl

People can get annoyed when you post the same thing in two places mate.
But good luck with the truck.

2l-t or 2l-te?
I've had a 2l-te pump apart and you do need some special tools to time them correctly (exuberance of youth) mine did run afterwards but not well.
if its a 2l-te do a reset on the ecu the button is by the rev counter below the bung in the dash display you'll need a fine pin to reach through and push it.(look up the exact sequence it's been over ten years)
put 20 litres of fresh diesel in the tank and crank it with all the injectors cracked once they squirt nip them up whilst they are still squirting/cranking.
if it doesn't start and run continuously,
next step if it is a 2lte you will need to do an electrical tour pulling every plug checking that each pin and port is making a good connection you may need to pick some of the female ports closed a bit with a pin/seal pick especially if the loom is tight/short to the connection including/especially the plugs into the ecu.
if it doesn't run now,
its time to look at running a diagnostic scan on it, knock sensors etc do fail and cause intermittent run faults, also the park sensor if its an auto.

if its a 2lt or e, diesels need fuel compression and timing, the pump you have put on could be firing at the wrong time, I had to pull an injector to make sure no.1 was at tdc before installing the cam belt on mine otherwise it will just flood and wash the bore with diesel.

This all sounds so simple and rudimentary now but I literally spent months trying and finally succeeding to get mine going when I was younger and dumber
problems are only a problem if you not willing to learn how to find solutions
